In 1975, a small but uniquely structured mutual fund company came into being. More than a quarter-century later, Vanguard is internationally known for exceptional client service and the highest-value products in the industry.
Most investment firms are publicly traded or privately owned. Vanguard is different. We're owned by the Vanguard funds, which are owned by our clients. Helping our investors achieve their goals is our sole reason for existence. With no other parties to answer to and no conflicting loyalties, we can keep investing costs as low as possible.
At Vanguard, you'll be part of a culture that calls for doing what is right in every situation, every day.
Vanguard has grown from fewer than 50 crew members in our first year to more than 13,000 today, working in offices across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.A choice of locations

Culture and Values
At Vanguard, treating people right is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s our clients or our crew members, we share a commitment to putting others first and this mindset has created an organization that’s built to last. We believe that success is measured by finding:
- A workplace where you can voice your opinions, stay true to yourself, build a career, and be recognized for your professional contributions.
- A path that leverages your strengths, is in line with your career goals, and makes you feel engaged and excited about coming to work every day.
Our inclusive culture, combined with formal and informal networking opportunities, a stable and caring leadership team, a variety of career development resources, and opportunities for lifelong learning, exists to support every crew member throughout his or her career journey.
Our mission is simple. We aim to help our clients—individuals, institutions, or financial advisors—reach their financial goals by being the world's highest-value provider of investment products and services. We accomplish this by offering a range of investment products, including low-cost mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, as well as investment-related services such as advice, brokerage, and retirement savings programs.
We pledge to adhere to the highest standard of ethical behavior and fiduciary responsibility in all that we do. We put our clients' interests first and we invest the majority of our assets alongside theirs. We communicate candidly about risks and costs, as well as rewards.
Our investment philosophy
We believe that investing is a long-term proposition, not a matter of chasing short-term performance or investment fads. By focusing on low costs, diversification, and a long-term perspective, we can help position our clients for long-term investment success.
Our community involvement
Our Vanguard Gives Back program connects our crew to opportunities that serve local communities and offer a chance for skills development. These opportunities include events such as:
- United Way Day of Caring
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
- My Classroom Economy
All crew members also receive one paid volunteer day off each calendar year to serve the charity or organization of their choice.
Crew members can explore career paths across a broad range of disciplines including finance, accounting, human resources, marketing, and law, and are encouraged to take on assignments that develop new skills and areas of expertise. We invite you to join us for a career opportunity that will motivate, challenge and inspire you.
As soon as you start working at Vanguard, you'll learn what's expected of you and what you need to do to achieve results. You'll have access to a wide variety of resources, receive support to help you succeed, and much more.
Your career is an investment—for yourself and for Vanguard. Once you've joined our crew, we'll work with you to develop your unique talent and further your expertise through training programs and other resources.
Growth through diversity
With so many career options available, crew members have every opportunity to build a successful career at Vanguard. And while the journey of two individuals to the same career destination may be quite different, one thing remains uniform—the feeling that they both have opportunities to achieve their professional goals.
In our mission to be the best, we know that diversity of people and viewpoints is a vital asset. We are proud to partner with professional organizations such as the National Black MBA Association, the National Society of Hispanics MBAs and Management Leadership for Tomorrow. We also foster an inclusive environment through Crew Resource Groups (CRGs), which support our diverse work environment and promote inclusion, education, and development.

We compete for talent and for business in a highly competitive environment, so our cash compensation and benefits are commensurate with our goal of attracting and retaining a high-performing crew.
There are three major elements to our total compensation package: base salary, the Partnership program, and the opportunity for crew members in select job levels to receive bonuses. Each component is explained below.
The base salary sets the foundation on which our compensation package is built. The base salary you receive when you're hired will be highly competitive with the compensation offered in the marketplace for equivalent positions. This ensures we remain an employer of choice for the best talent.
Partnership is how all crew members share in the success of the company. It's an annual cash payment based on the previous three years' business results. Partnership is unique to Vanguard and has been paid every year since the program began in 1984. The program reinforces a collective interest in the company's long-term success—a meaningful portion of your compensation depends on overall company performance. You qualify for your first Partnership payment in the year following your date of hire.
Crew members in select job levels are eligible for an annual bonus based on personal performance. Bonuses recognize distinctive contributions to the company and are typically paid in December.
Best-in-class health care coverage, a generous retirement and savings plan, and life insurance are all part of the Total Rewards package you'll receive as a crew member—along with your compensation, work-life offerings, and conveniences. Our Total Rewards package is a big reason Vanguard is an employer of choice.
Medical and prescription
Our FlexCare coverage allows you to select from two medical plans. Each plan includes prescription drug coverage.
Choose from two dental options offered through Delta Dental—a Standard plan or an Enhanced plan.
The optional FlexCare vision plan provides coverage for two pairs of corrective glasses, two pairs of contact lenses, or one pair of each annually.
Flexible spending accounts
You may elect to participate in a health care flexible spending account (FSA), which allows you to set aside pre-tax money for your out-of-pocket health expenses, or a dependent care FSA, which allows you to set aside pre-tax money for day care or other dependent-related expenses.
Paid time off
Your paid time off is yours to use in any way you choose—for vacation, for short-term illness, or for personal reasons.
Life insurance and survivor benefits
Vanguard offers life insurance coverage equal to two times your direct pay, as well as an equal amount of accidental death and dismemberment coverage. It's provided to crew members at no cost. You can also choose to increase this coverage through supplemental life insurance. Coverage is available to spouses and dependents as well.
Onsite health clinic and fitness center
Use Vanguard's Wellness Center to stay healthy. You can visit CrewCare, our onsite health clinic, or ShipShape, our state-of-the-art fitness center.
If you wish to continue your education while working full-time at Vanguard, our Academic Assistance Plan can help pay the cost. It provides up to $9,000 reimbursement per year for tuition and books for eligible graduate and undergraduate courses at accredited institutions.
Retirement and savings plan
The Vanguard Retirement and Savings Plan allows you to invest a portion of your income in Vanguard funds, building your 401(k). We also match a portion of your contribution.
Leave of absence
Vanguard is ready to help if you require a leave of absence from work for personal reasons.
Optional coverage through Hyatt Legal Plans can help you, your spouse, and your children with personal legal services.
When you've completed your career at Vanguard, you'll continue to enjoy the advantages of Total Rewards.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than an year)Pros
The company culture is incredibly inviting. There are so many ways that Vanguard looks to get "crew members" involved - in fact, promoting crew engagement is one of management's top priorities. The fact that Vanguard operates at-cost (especially noticeable in a client-facing role) makes work satisfying, knowing with confidence that you are doing the right thing by other people and are not driven by ulterior motives. There are a number of new Crew Resource Groups (known as Employee Resource Groups at other institutions), encouraging a diverse workforce, as well as hundreds (more?) of people who have spent their entire careers here. Job security is taken very seriously, as Vanguard has never conducted a layoff in its 40 year history. An extensive benefits package (health, vacation time, dry-cleaning, etc. etc.) is extremely competitive, and Vanguard really believes in the work-life balance. As the largest mutual fund company in the world, you know you're working for one of the most reputable, ethical companies out there.Cons
Because Vanguard operates at-cost (with few, if any, commission-based positions), salaries are not competitive for side-by-side comparisons with other financial services institutions; however, I personally believe that the benefits package really fills the void here. There are very few companies that match what Vanguard offers in that arena. Furthermore, advancement into leadership is a different game at Vanguard. In many cases, having tenure and years of experience in one area does not guarantee you for a leadership position, as Vanguard is really looking for those with specific leadership characteristics, some of which are difficult to really determine. Leadership is incredibly competitive, and beyond one's early career (as Vanguard has developed leadership programs, highly catered to those new to the company and toward the beginnings of their careers), it is a tough battle to get to that stage.Advice to ManagementAdvice
The culture as far as inclusion and doing the right thing by other people is unmatchable. I can't imagine another company that is on par with Vanguard as far as that is concerned. My advice would be to consider the way in which crew are hired into leadership; I feel as though the approach is far too close-minded, and this is the cause of the most discouragement among those I have spoken with.RecommendsPositive OutlookApproves of CEO
Getting an Interview
Getting an Interview
- Application Details
I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks – interviewed at Vanguard.Interview Details
Applied through university. Was scheduled a one on one interview on campus which was behavioral based. Asked specifically what an ETF, Bond, Stock, and Mutual Fund are.
Was called back within a week to schedule an onsite interview. The second interview consisted of a case study and role play. The case study was fairly easy, they just want to know that the customer is your first priority. The role play was a mock phone call with a customer who did not know what to do with her investments, and you had to guide her in a direction based on her concerns.Interview Questions
