I worked at Videon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I can't say enough good things about this company. The people are friendly and encouraging, the management are approachable and helpful. They are always seeking ways to inspire employees to lead better lives through health programs and a variety of other activities. Work-life balance and time off policies are good. You'll never get undue pressure to pull late nights, though those who do are accordingly recognized and sometimes rewarded. From an engineering standpoint their commitment to improving process is very high. The emphasis on patch reviews comprised one of the best learning experiences of my career thus far.

    Cons

Every problem I had at this company was internal (in my head). The biggest challenge I had was simply learning to integrate with others effectively. If you're a calm or passive person you may have a challenge getting recognized. A lot of people here are high energy and extroverted (which isn't a bad thing in and of itself).

Secondly, recent (last couple years) application of the scrum software process has been a bit rocky and has had the unfortunate effect of eroding the educational aspect of patch reviews due to scrum being used to induce urgency. Incorrect application of this process induces a sense of failure (in me) every two weeks or so. It also reduces an engineer's natural tendency to wander (in productive, curious ways), which for me is essential to flow and feeling engaged with the work. Sufficiently bold employees may not be as affected by the process as I was, though, so take my words with a grain of salt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of my long term goals here had been to eventually be a senior software engineer. I was never quite sure what exactly I'd need to do to earn that position. I know it's in the works right now though (career tracks).

I applied in-person. The process took 4 days - interviewed at Videon in April 2013.

    Interview Details

There are no pointless and absurd interview questions here, so don't bother preparing for them. They'll ask you relevant questions about your experience, background, and general knowledge to determine whether you are the best person for the job according to its responsibilities. Of course there are standardized questions, but they'll have a conversation with you - they won't interrogate you.

    Interview Questions
    • I can't remember any strange ones so I'm assuming there were none. The most unexpected and intimidating part was when the CEO came in for a one-on-one session for an INTERN'S interview. Turned out that it was the best part about the whole interview process. Another perk of the small-medium business environment.   Answer Question
