The Pilot Hiring Process at XOJET

At XOJET, our commitment to investing in our people begins with recruitment. XOJET pilots complete a thorough interview process, meeting several members of the team and learning about our business.

We accept pilot applications on a rolling basis, and qualified candidates that successfully complete the interviews will be placed into a pilot pool if no positions are available at the time. As a pilot interviewing with XOJET you can expect to:

1)         Review the job description to ensure you meet the minimum First Officer qualifications and submit your application online.

2)         Selected applicants will be scheduled to participate in a phone interview and successful candidates will be scheduled to complete a technical interview via video chat (FaceTime or Skype).

3)         After the phone interviews you will be placed in a pool to be invited to attend an interview at our Flight Ops center in Sacramento, CA.

4)         If selected after the interview, candidates will be offered a class date to begin orientation in Sacramento, CA.

    I worked at XOJET full-time (More than 3 years)


    XOJet offers an incredible opportunity to gain tremendous business aviation experience. Although the schedule is "hard" (8 days on, 6 days off), your work days are uniquely dynamic. A plane may end up in any city in North America, which is a double edged sword; it keeps the job very exciting, but also tough due to lack of ability to mentally plan. Most days will consist of 1-5 legs (average 2 legs; 2-5 hours of flight time total) The pilot group at XOJet is one of the most talented and easy going in the industry. Each individual has a unique personality, which makes each week a new chapter. You will make friends for life here. Safety is a huge focus, and you can expect that management will back you up. Life on the road is decent, with a very liberal meal policy (expensed, no per diem) and typically a rental car to explore (although as business has picked up free time is a commodity). Marriott and Hilton properties are preferred. Pilots keep all points/miles. Healthy benefits are decent, and include all the usual.


    8 days on the road/away from loved ones can be tough, especially when business is up/flying all day every day. Additionally, the norm is fast becoming that day 1 and day 8 include commuting to work AND flying a leg or two. An early/exhausting start on day one can make or break the rest of the week. Also, many times a pilot will fly on day 8 before heading home. The compensation/salary is getting better, but still not where it needs to be for a pilot working 200+ days a year. There is a "pay scale" in place now, but it is not comparable to major airlines by any means. It does allow for a small increase each year. The 401k match is severely lacking, which makes XOJet a tough place to picture working in the long term. There are 8 days of vacation offered the first several years; unfortunately, this isn't enough and can't be used when needed. The way the system works, the only way to use it is in the 8-day block. There is no taking individual days off for appointments, obligations, family matters, etc. There is seniority based bid each year, and most individuals don't get their 8 day block off when they need it.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to work towards a competitive compensation package, and focus on a better schedule (i.e. 7/7; legitimate vacation time with flexibility to take days off when needed). Although you indicate that we should not compare our packages to others in the industry due to our business model, you have to realize that these other organizations are competition from a "your pilots have the choice to go work there" point of view. Also, if you are going to trust the pilots to fly high-profile clients on multi-million dollar aircraft, why not trust them with smaller decisions (such as booking/changing their own flight home?)

    I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at XOJET (North Highlands, CA).


    Applied for the Tracker position and had a over the phone interview with basic interview questions and nothing technical. Received a follow up email asking for an in-person interview. The in-person interview was overwhelming and a littler over the top due to 7 people involved. They went around the room taking turns asking question after question. I felt as most questions were standard interview questions. I thought the interview went well and was told I would hear back soon. After following up a week later and no reply, I decided to call a little over two weeks later and was given a short "I was meaning to contact you, we went with another candidate". It seems XOJet is very much interested in your personality and not as much your skills and experience.

    • Asked questions based on customer service, attention to detail and time management. A few questions came up about personality and also situational questions and how you would handle them. A few aviation topics that were covered were ground delay programs and weather.   Answer Question
