Caring for Underserved Patients

Providing top-notch care in the New Haven community means caring for a number of people who may find it difficult to pay for routine health services. We take great pride in offering extensive charity and free care, as well as one of the most generous financial assistance policies in the country. We’ve developed a number of programs—includingThe Primary Care Center and The Women’s Care Center at Yale-New Haven—dedicated to meeting the needs of uninsured or underinsured patients. And our Wellness Information Network helps link uninsured patients who come to the Emergency Department with potential primary care physicians.

Special Care for Families

As part of our commitment to the community, we’re proud to play a leadership role in women’s and children’s health care issues. We’ve developed a wide range of programs to support women and children, including:

  • The Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which provides free routine mammograms, clinical breast exams and Pap smears to eligible women over 40.
  • The Strategic Alliance for Learning, Outreach and Networking (S.A.L.O.N.) partnership with regional beauty salons provides breast health education and screening outreach services to African-American and Hispanic women over 50.
  • The Yale-New Haven Mobile Mammography Van has performed more than 10,000 screenings across the region since 2002.
  • The largest Women, Infant and Children (WIC) nutrition program in New Haven, administered through the Pediatric Primary Care Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
  • Numerous parenting programs and parental support services, including emotional support, educational play programs and Motherhead—which uses children’s literature to help new moms understand the benefits of reading to children.

Being a Good Neighbor

As a hospital, as individuals and as members of the New Haven community, we’re proud to sponsor and participate in a number of programs and activities that benefit the people of Southern Connecticut. Working closely with community organizations, public agencies, the clergy, elected officials and community leaders, we work hard to improve the quality of life for our neighbors.

  • Community-wide initiatives, launched each year, address a variety of key issues, like substance abuse, asthma treatment and managing diabetes.
  • Our School-to-Career program in partnership with area schools has built a foundation for future job growth and has put hundreds of students on the path to a brighter future.
  • We spend more than $9 million annually in a variety of public health programs.
  • We also invest in many community programs, including the Mayor’s Youth Initiative, a Summer Jobs Program for city teens, Mentor New Haven, the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Haven, and expanded public day care for the city of New Haven.
  • We’ve created Housing programs for low-income families in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood, and an Employee Home Ownership Assistance Program to help employees purchase homes in the city.
  • Yale-New Haven Hospital is an active participant in the City of New Haven Homeless Advisory Commission, which is in the midst of a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness in the city.
  • The Yale-New Haven Hospital Latino Advisory Council is designed to enhance the relationship between the hospital and New Haven’s large Latino community.
  • We also worked with local businesses, community, religious, health care and social service leaders to form the Yale-New Haven Hospital Community Council, which meets three times each year to discuss important city issues.

    I applied online. The process took 6+ weeks. I interviewed at Yale-New Haven Hospital.


    It was a very pleasant experience. I was asked mostly behavioral style questions. It took over a month to get an interview. I applied online and received a call to schedule interview with recruiter. I haven't received any follow up yet but was told that it was a long process.
