Zurich projects recognized for problem solving (Daily Herald Business Ledger)

SCHAUMBURG – Zurich North America has been recognized as one of 12 companies whose unique, creative approaches to problem solving is featured in the January, 2014 edition of Best’s Review Magazine.

Two Zurich innovations, the “Zurich Risk Room” and “My Zurich Portal,” were recognized by judges for their innovative approaches to problem solving. The Zurich Risk Room is a proprietary risk assessment tool that provides an analysis of more than 70 multivariate risks covering more than 150 countries. “My Zurich Portal” is a Web-based tool giving corporate customers access to important data about their insurance programs through a single, easy-to-use platform available anytime and anywhere around the globe.

“We are pleased to receive this recognition for these two, innovative Zurich programs,” said Zurich Global Corporate in North America Chief Executive Officer Dan Riordan. “Both were developed to empower corporate customers to become more engaged in optimizing their global risk management programs. The goal was to empower them with data that can help them make better strategic decisions to protect against risk.”  

In reviewing “My Zurich,” Gates Ouimette, founder and principal of ITconnector, said it is “absolutely innovative in terms of concept.” In evaluating the “Zurich Risk Room,” expert William H. Panning, principal and founder of ERMetrics LLC, said it is “a distinct innovation worthy of recognition.”

The Zurich Risk Room enables customers to develop hypothetical risk scenarios that can aid in making more informed strategic decisions about business and risk management strategies abroad. It tracks more than 70 key risk factors as defined in the annual World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report. The tool explores interrelated impacts of a variety of macroeconomic, environmental, health, geo-political, technological and business risks on 150 individual countries.

The Web-based My Zurich Portal gives customers an overview of vital informa¬tion concerning their international insurance programs as well as a wide range of insights about individual risk assessments. The tool provides easy access to program information and electronic versions of important risk management program documents on a 24/7 basis. The tool allows customers to monitor at their discretion the status of their international programs, see overviews of claims histories and proactively manage risk improvements online.

According to Best’s Review, its Innovation Showcase is not an award. Rather, it is an annual forum for recognizing forward thinking among insurance organizations. A panel of insurance industry experts assessed the relative merits of all 41 submissions in the 2013 event. Companies from North America, Germany, China and India participated.

    I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (more than an year)


    Co-workers are wonderful, there is little to no corporate politics going on
    Lots of on-the-job training
    Networking and volunteer opportunities are available in abundance
    Benefits package


    Some of the management team doesn't seem to respond well to employees advancing their careers by moving to other departments.
    Salary - underpaid compared to some other insurance companies

    You may find that some departments are more open to career growth than others. Great job in keeping all employees aware of big-picture policies and goals!

    The process took 2+ monthsinterviewed at Zurich North America.

    Interview Details

    I was initially contacted by a recruiter who asked very few, simple questions. Two weeks later, the recruiter called and set up an onsite interview. I met with two hiring managers simultaneously that asked me a series of seven behavioral/situational questions. After that they asked additional questions that they had come up during the original questions and, more specifically, about my work history. At the end, they asked if I had any questions. After a week, the recruiter contacted me again and had me meet with the Underwriting Supervisor and a Director. These onsite interviews were more specific to me as a candidate. I met with these two individuals separately. Each took about 45 minutes. Again, time was allotted at the end for me to ask questions. Two weeks later I received an offer.

    The interview questions were very standard. They wanted answers to paint a picture of the situation, how you handled it, and the outcome.

    Having good questions specific to the position and the company culture were very important. Also, ask questions about things that come up in conversation to show you are listening and digesting the information they provide.
