    You can make it work....

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGenerous time off around the holidays. Lots of flexibility for telework. Helpful, dedicated support from often overworked and understaffed departments that work with multiple brands and business units (creative, HR, production, ad operations, circulation/list management, IT). Depending on your department, there’s plenty of opportunity to work creatively and independently. Great co-workers.

ConsFrozen pay raises lowers morale and sends hard-working, ambitious people to greener pastures, making it hard for managers to keep the department going. Recruitment, training and managing a new employee is a huge time suck (though with HR doing recruitment, it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be). Still, turnover wastes the time of the remaining employees who have to pick up the slack. Too-frequent layoffs or job eliminations, while often making more work for most everyone remaining, tends to weed out people who were in the wrong job (sometimes through no fault of their own) or underperforming. That’s very disheartening on a personal/team level but probably good for the company, as it focuses manpower and raises the bar for new hires.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward good employees with more money, not just an inflated title. Encourage more cross-brand, cross-department, cross-business-unit communication. Bright, creative people could solve their own problems (and find innovative solutions) if they knew who to talk to for insight and advice. Communicate the company strategy (even as it changes) to all employees and encourage questions and feedback. The people who actually do the work have good ideas, and actively listening and trying out some home-grown ideas might make employees feel like more than fixed costs.

Management says things are looking up, but they still refuse to invest in their people

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Pros- Great PTO (15 days, plus one week off at Xmas and Thanksgiving)
    - Hard-working people

Cons- Management obviously sees employees as expendable and will happily let people go for non-reasons, yet refuse to clean house when there are bad eggs that NEED to go.
    - No raises (newly launched evaluations are a joke) - people are underpaid and unhappy.
    - Some departments have extremely high turnover, which makes others nervous.
    - HR is inept.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive raises, show appreciation for your people, and invest more money into your employees instead of just acquiring other entities. ("You won't get a raise, but look at these new publications we just bought!") Also put managers in place who actually do their jobs. When a few bad employees ruin morale for many others, something needs to be done.

Great place to work for the last 2.5 years

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros- Not afraid to try new strategic directions based on brand/industry - not a "one size fits all" for product strategy
     - Senior Management becoming more transparent/offering more info after employee requests to do so
     - Great PTO
     - Incredibly responsive IT department
     - Fantastic manager

Cons- Salary raises/bonuses are hard to come by unless you give a portion of your soul and 60+ hours/week to your position
     - Sometimes you feel like a jack of all trades, master of none with how many hats need to be worn due to small team sizes

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more info as to why/why not a raise will happen if an employee has been there for more than 2 years without an increase.

    Horrible Experience

Web Designer (Former Employee) Chatsworth, CA

ProsCompetitive Salary, there is nothing else positive to say about this company

    ConsLong work days, poor management

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to hire people who know what they are doing and know how to manage people and projects so that there isn't unpaid overtime required everyday every week.

get experience and get out (max: 1 year)

1105 media (Former Employee) Vienna, VA

Pros- 15 days PTO + all federal holidays + 1 week for thanksgiving + 1 week for christmas = amazing!
    - and some employees are great/fun to work with
^^ literally, those are the ONLY pros

    Cons- POLITICS.
    - so many secrets within the hire management
    - you feel as though you're doing great but you will never be recognized and/or will be ignored [constantly] by hire managers
    - you will never [I MEAN NEVER] get a salary raise here. you can be here for 2/3 years and your salary will stay the same.....
    - holiday party: doesn't exist
    - bonuses: this company doesn't even know what bonuses are because they never give them
    - hire management will always say 'oh, we can't afford to give you a raise' or 'we can't afford a holiday party' ...
     - they'll expect you to work long hours, don't. stick to your 9 -5 and then once 5 pm rolls around call it a day.

Advice to Senior Management- enforce reviews every 6 months - I had to ask for mine
    - give raises to those who deserve it
    - more company events, there are so many people who work at the company for 4/5 months that do not know each other

    Interesting

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Vienna, VA

ProsI had a great manager. Everyone who worked there seemed to mean well from the top down in this office

ConsEveryone seemed disenfranchised or fatigued it is hard to put a word to the feeling but you could sense something below the surface. You could hear a pin drop in the office.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo more team building. Get people excited to work here rather than spin in their tracks. Your primary products are tech magazines BE THE FUTURE instead of trying to catch up.

    If you need a job

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Simi Valley, CA

ProsKeep your head down and don't make waves you will get paid

ConsA small company like a small town, no new things and no really good opportunities. You will get red lined here if you make too much.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't hire people you don't see a future with

1105 is a media company in a tough market

Regional Sales Manager (Former Employee) Framingham, MA

ProsFlexible, friendly people, average pay scales. Lots of time off , including the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas and all federal holidays. Informal environment, flexible work hours and average benefits for a company of this size.

ConsLittle opportunity for promotion due to company size. Salaries are lower than normal due to cut backs to keep margins at profitability. People are considered expendable items that can be reduced or added depending upon the business climate. No position is guaranteed even if you are doing a great job.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more often

Great work-life balance, great group of people

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Vienna, VA

ProsThis is one of the best balances of work and life I’ve had in my career. The work load is heavy, but the management is responsive and very good at prioritizing if you feel overwhelmed. Co-workers are very helpful and encouraging. Just today, I had someone from another department take the time just to say, “Thank you for all that you do.” This compelled me to write the review as it is not a rare occurrence for coworkers/management to express appreciation for even the very little things.

The autonomy is definitely a plus here. Many people in the Vienna office work remotely, but they have a company-wide Facbook-like website and most people use it and instant messaging to communicate with each other.

They also provide free online tutorials and courses on tons of software programs like Java, Web development and even marketing training, so you can keep your business and design skills fresh as well as learn new ones.

The breaks for the holidays are super because you don’t need to use vacay for X-mas or Thanksgiving (office is closed the entire week). We usually get out early on the Friday before a holiday as well. Free garage parking, free soda, snacks and the location in Vienna, VA is bright and cheery.

ConsExpensive health care —more than double the cost of premiums I’ve had through other employer-sponsored coverage.

Advice to Senior ManagementLower the employee contribution for health coverage and hire more people who actually enjoy what they do; happy employees work harder and produce better work.
