I have been working at 1901 Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good compensation and benefits. Good interaction and exposure with technically strong peers. Small and growing vendor with strong future potential. Top level management is transparent and communicates goals, is very open and communicates objectives well, has a realistic vision of where they want to go and know how to get there.

    Cons

Needs stronger technical managers with oversight and interaction down at the project level. Sense of polarity exists due to variety of discrete focuses, current active growth mode and geographic resource or team distribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop focused project teams. Hire strong technical managers.

I worked at 1901 Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a short drive within the Blacksburg area, I guess.

    Cons

As another review stated, just about everything else. There's a reason this company has lost nearly all of their contracts and laid off a multitude of people. There's a huge discrepancy between branches, if you're in Blacksburg you are basically irrelevant. There have been periods of time where the employer refused to pay a cycle to the Blacksburg staff. Managerial staff are borderline abusive and the skill set of the operations staff is very lacking.

Lower level compensation is about half of the industry standard with really no opportunity for advancement or additional skill sets. The CFO even proudly touted they spent over a quarter million dollars in recruiting for no tangible benefit without even considering improving existing staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As you have found out, placing your buddies with zero knowledge of IT into director level roles for the type of services provided was a recipe for disaster.

Sinking ship, but a decent resume filler

    Pros

Good on work-life balance, coworkers are good people, free snacks and good health benefits. Managers are accessible.

    Cons

Everything else, basically. They severely underpay their workers (think 1/3rd of what entry-level usually is for the position), raises were a year behind and then canceled for many employees. Management doesn't manage and uses tools to supplement. They overwork their employees and turnover is incredibly high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, hire more people -- and treat them well so they stay. Never in my years working there did I find someone who didn't complain about working there.
