I have been working at 99 Cents Only full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It is better than a slow painful death but not by much.

    Cons

After 28 years in retail this is the worst most dysfunctional company I have ever worked at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The freight system in this company is so disorganized its a miracle they are still in business. The warehouse sends twice as much product to the stores than they have room for. The result is the back room is crammed wall to wall, floor to ceiling with product that can't be displayed on the sales floor. Their solution is to put dozens of pallets of freight outside the store with zero security. Anyone can drive by the back of the store and help themselves to whatever they want because nobody cares about this problem. Not the store management, the district manager, the regional manager or anybody else in the corporate office. Apparently the main focus of this company is to push as much low quality product out the door as possible with no regard to the treatment of their employees or customers. There is absolutely NO customer service practiced by the staff. The employees are treated horribly by the management who expect unreasonable results for just over minimum wage. The turnover is astounding. In the 3 months I worked there there were only 14 people left out of 45 who were there when I started. The quality of the employees they attract are 5 notches below Walmart. Homeless people, drug addicts, drunks, teenagers on their first job and sexual predators. That's right, the store manager used to work at Dollar Tree and got a 17 year old cashier pregnant. When her parents found out, they went after him so he faked a knee injury and stopped working claiming he needed to take time off for a phony medical issue. He got caught and was fired but 99 cents deemed him fit to be a manager there, knowing his history at Dollar Tree because his district manager at 99 cents was the district manager at Dollar Tree who fired him! I hated this job so much I would get physically sick just pulling into the parking lot knowing that I had to deal with all the drama and disorganization for the next 4 to 8 hours. Working there was mental and physical torture I have never experienced in almost 30 years in retail. Stay away from this place at all costs. There is a lot more to say but just thinking about the 99 cents store is making me nauseous.

    Pros

There is nothing positive to say about the company.

    Cons

Verry unorganized upper management. You do what your DM tells you to do one day, and your regional manager has you do it a different way the next day all while corporate sends down a completely different direction. Its insane.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get an email system for every store! Really, you still use fax machines? If we are going to execute something, lets make one decision and stick with it. The new auto replenishment system is a joke! Its ment for small department stores, not stores with 100,000 different UPC's. Did you even look up who their clients are??? The company Walmart uses has only been around since 2008 and they use it effectively. It took me 20 minutes of research to figure out all this.
