I have been working at A. M. Castle full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I've been with the company for a long time for a reason. The benefits and 401K are decent, I enjoy my work and the people that I work with really care about our goal and are a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

In the last 3-5 yrs. the climate has changed dramatically. The introduction of a new ERP coupled with inadequate training has severely impacted overall employee morale. Upper level leadership has become somewhat of a revolving door. Gone are the days when one could approach a manager with a concern and feel confident that your concerns would be taken into consideration and addressed accordingly. Instead there is a climate of "doing whatever is necessary to reach the goal". This has meant the loss of several valuable employees with the work being redistributed among the remaining, already over-taxed employees. The threat of an impending closure looms over our heads daily with no clear answers being provided by management, the air of uncertainty is palpable. No Bueno.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Times change, the marketplace changes. Communicate with your employees. Let us know how the company is really performing. Nothing is worse than not knowing if we will have a job tomorrow. We have families to support and bills to pay. Show us that you care enough to give us the truth.

I have been working at A. M. Castle full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

great company 10-15 years ago before it went "corporate"
great employees (office, traffic, warehouse) that care for their job.

    Cons

shareholders are the top priority not the customer. how can a bussiness succeed if their customer is not the top priority?
no communication between management and workforce
implementation of "the flavor of the month" business strategies.
    "Bottom line" mentality.
Short term goals set by "drive thru" upper management.
lack of commitment from leadership towards long term goals.
save money by loosing bussiness "strategy".
save money by taking it from their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    reevaluate your priorities:
1.- The Customer and always the customer
    2.- Employees
if you take care of the customer and employees, they will take care of you (the owners)

    I worked at A. M. Castle full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

diversity of employee backgrounds and experience. many different ideas brought to the table. there are a lot of opportunities as the corporation is diverse and spread out all of the US and globally.

    Cons

unclear direction and vision presented from top down. across the board the vision, and goals are not well aligned and they often conflict across interrelated work groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

communicate, communicate, communicate. Glassdoor lists the previous CEO There has been a new CEO since October 2012. please update the records. The company I joined 10 years ago was known for it's employee treatment and perks. the company I left only cares about the bottom line numbers. while bottom line numbers is how any business succeeds on paper creating an environment where employees care about their place of employment is critical to long term success.

    Pros

The people that work at Castle Metals are from a diverse background bringing fresh ideas to every topic.

    Cons

This diverse business experience also is their negative as I do not see a clear cohesive goal that all members are working to achieve. Departments seem to lack the unifying vision and sometimes work toward opposing metrics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate your vision better throughout the business.

I have been working at A. M. Castle full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

120+ years of history, neutural in this aspect actually; relatively spread out globally; some relative strength in aerospace/industrial plastics sectors.

    Cons

acquisition of TSI in 2011 is a huge failure, great uncertainty for the road ahead, basic strategy unsound, not sincere in treating people fair and square, very poor process fairness not to mention fairness in final results, bottom level employees greatly demoralized, productivity suffers, lots of attritions and silent retaliations here and there. Only things this company is capable of is to follow the trails of resigned employees and enters a law suit to slow down or scare them off from setting up or enterring competition business.

I have been working at A. M. Castle full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Still some good people left who understand the metals distribution industry.
Was once a great place to work but changed in the last 3 years.
    Good systems and marginal training.

    Cons

Everything else....particularly upper management as they are all new and don't understand the distribution industry.
Follows general direction of the economy since management can't think strategically to grow sales.
The board of directors is inept!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people who understand the business.

I have been working at A. M. Castle

    Pros

There are very loyal and dedicated employees in Castle. Many employees are long-service and give tremendously to make Castle successful. The benefits are OK, not great.

    Cons

The executives of the company receive all of the rewards, even when the results do not justify rewards. The company lost money last year and the executives all received very large bonuses.
Human Resources leadership is lacking. It is hard to see the company surviving into the future with its poor results.

    I worked at A. M. Castle

    Pros

Team work philosophy among most branch employees
    Friendly, family atmosphere
Decent benefits, including 401k match and reasonably priced health insurace

    Cons

Major difference in benefits between warehouse & office employees
"Revolving door" for managers, new GM every 6-12 months
Total failure to integrate legacy companies
Silo mentality - different departments have mutually exclusive goals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that different divisions need different tools in order to serve the customer. Give warehouse employees equal benefits, and spend some time/money on recognizing the people (and customers) who stuck it out during the tough years.
