Current Employee – been working at A Place for Mom full-time for more than a year
Pros – Work from home, good pay, very rewarding and a sense that you are truly helping others in need. Compensation is very high compared to any other home office based job. Anyone who could not make more than $50k in the advisor job after a year, just wasn't good at this job. It is a 40 hour job, some people just don't put in the time out of a home office. After 20 months, I still love it!
Cons – Some night and weekend work. Must be able to self manage. Used to be full commission, now is salary commission. Not for everyone, must be very compassionate and work well with people over the phone. The first year when it was salary only was very difficult. Recent changes have helped with that.

Current Employee – been working at A Place for Mom full-time for more than a year
Pros – I have been working for A Place for Mom for almost 2 years and have had several opportunities to gain new experiences and move up within the company. I started as a call center employee right out of college, back when the company was much smaller. After several months of great performance they started having me train the new call center employees. I loved the job and the challenges it presented. I had expressed to my supervisor that I was interested in trying to go to different departments to help with finding a future career. She helped me join a pilot program for the marketing department. My manager helped me every step of the way; from learning the basics to discussing theories and best practices. After a few months I was offered an official position on the team and was beyond excited. I have even become certified through Google and Microsoft.
The travel compensation makes my very long commute easier financially which is great. Plus the sun decks and ping pong tables are a great way to relax and get away from the computer for a few minutes every day.
Cons – Snack budget was cut so there are no longer any free snacks.
Noticeable lack of department interactions. Nearly zero interactions with individuals from other departments.
Advice to Senior Management – I appreciate the practice where we receive monthly updates directly from the CEO. It helps me feel connected to the different departments and keeps me up to date on what is going on in the company.
There should be more office sponsored activities to promote communication and interactions for individuals from other departments. This helps the company create a better work environment because people will be more comfortable knowing the people they work with.

Current Employee – been working at A Place for Mom full-time for less than a year
Pros – The call center has an amazing view, the company will help pay for a bus pass, and some team leaders try really hard to make work as fun as they can.
Cons – There aren't any real advancement opportunities, some team leaders have a penchent for micromanaging, and it felt like I was working in a sweat shop.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop micromanaging, actually promote people.

Former Employee – worked at A Place for Mom full-time for more than a year
Pros – I loved helping families in crisis. To know that you could provide the information that they needed when they were feeling lost was incredible. Loved working from home.
Cons – Too bad that if they didn't have the funds to live in a private pay AL or retirement community that you were pretty much out of luck to help them. I was actually told that if they didn't have the money I needed to 'dump them' and move on to someone who did. I can't tell you how many people I called from my home phone to give them info that would help them, so I wouldn't get in trouble...again...for spending time on families without funds. I accepted the job to help people, and I determined to do just that, whether they had money or not. My last straw was when I needed time off to care for a senior in my own family and was raked across the coals for it. My supervisor actually asked me if I planned on moving hom into a facility, because she would be my counselor. What, so she could get the credit for the move? My background is in senior housing and I can d take care of that myself if I ever need to. Instead I left the company and care for my father myself at home.
Advice to Senior Management – This could be a great company if they learn to treat people with respect and dignity...employees, partner communities and families without huge pockets.

Former Employee – worked at A Place for Mom
Pros – Growing industry and good solid training for a future career path...but not with APFM
Cons – Terrible compensation for the amount of work involved. The quotas have been set way too high and all the creativity and accomplishment has been removed from the position. Management says they are listening, but most of us felt very mislead and many good people are leaving
Advice to Senior Management – They wouldn't listen

Former Employee – worked at A Place for Mom
Pros – Being an eldercare advisor is amazing - great personal satisfaction helping a family go from a nightmare to a resolution. The education you will receive, if you are hungry and look for it, is amazing.
Cons – No money. Micro-managed. Too many hats to wear so that you become a jack of all trades and a master of none, a telephone system that is a joke, 50 - 60 hours a week but you can only claim 40 which, if I'm 100% commission, why do you need my hours anyway? No respect from Sr Management. You're easily expendable. No loyalty from mgmt at all.
Advice to Senior Management – How about you pounding the phones for about 2 months just like I did every day before you start telling me how to do my job better? How about walking a mile in my shoes at 100% commission - not your inflated salary, with the same technology I have to work with, with all the hats I have to wear - do that for about 2 months and let's see how successful you are - EARN MY RESPECT.

Current Employee – been working at A Place for Mom
Pros – You will learn industry terms so that you may obtain a professional position elsewhere.
Cons – The job is totally misrepresented. The leads they provide are impossible to turn into moves. Mostly Medicaid due to poor lead sourcing yet they keep telling you to "work" them. Before hiring you are told all leads are provided and then learn that you must find your own leads to get paid.
POOR benefits - no vacation pay, 10 cents per mile (industry others pay 55 cents), 55 to 60 plus hours that you are forced to record as 40, goals keep increasing while pay decreases or is impossible to achieve.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop lying to the field staff who pay your salary.

Current Employee – been working at A Place for Mom
Pros – The position is a good resume builder for future positions. The office is in a nice location on Lake Union. Monthly transportation subsidies are available and complimentary snacks and coffee are provided.
Cons – There are very few opportunities for moving up in the company. Within the department, the raise system is based on constantly shifting metrics, so it's very hard to have any standard in place long enough to be able to justify a pay increase. The management team micro-manages insignificant details, but is completely incapable of dealing with real problems. Because of the scarcity of opportunity for upward advancement, employees often resort to using politics to increase their standing. Overall, the company has a very unhealthy work environment.
Advice to Senior Management – You can't afford to neglect the core business functions of the company in aggressive pursuit of expansion and growth. Also, most departments require several more support staff and can afford to do away with at least one layer of management. Lastly, more competitive salaries will help you to retain top performers and talent at every level.

Former Employee – worked at A Place for Mom

into the system looking for information.
more telephone sales call center type of work.
your working 7 days a week if you want to get ahead
