I worked at A.S. Watson as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They try to give you as much hands on experience when they can and as a result some of the tasks are very useful for developing time management and organizational skills

    Cons

The culture at HQ offices is very different from their other offices, much less interaction and intense. As an intern you are often not given much to do.

Likely to work on interesting multi-country projects but rarely realistically resourced or planned

I have been working at A.S. Watson full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Likely to be exposed to multi-country projects
    - within projects, typically you'll play multiple roles

    Cons

    - little / no employee development plans. Everything is ad-hoc, knee jerk and firefighting
    - lots of fiefdoms
    - management by fear, micro management. No encouragement for innovative thinking. Employees focused on and encouraged to cover backsides.
    - work output/quality is generally just enough. Rarely is it of a high standard
    - no conscious business processes. Most seem evolutionary and bureaucratic.
    - project schedules unrealistic, over-scoped and badly under resourced

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage employees to think outside the box, be innovative and fail occasionally without the threat of dire consequences. Failure is inevitable. From time to time it will happen. Your reaction to that is what builds high performing and engaged teams.

Be realistic with resourcing key projects.

I have been working at A.S. Watson full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong international exposure with significant expansion in Asia and a strong foothold in the European health and beauty markets

    Cons

Limited career progression and established training development opportunities. Structure and culture is heirarchial at times which can lead to a lack of vital information being passed up the chain towards senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more timein developing your current workforce

Fair company to work for, but growth limited.

I have been working at A.S. Watson

    Pros

For local managed MNC, this is probably one of the most diverse company to work for. The company do enjoy phenomenal growth in Asia and other development country- great place to learn how to run retail in emerging markets.

    Cons

Creativity is not valued - discipline is. Very efficient operator but lacks way behind in innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs to innovate to survive - operation effectiveness is not the only answer.
