I have been working at AAA Life Insurance Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Stable foundation
Lots of fresh faces with lots of positive energy
    New building in Omaha

    Cons

    Personal growth is minimal
Large scale operation for a mid-sized company
    Miscommunication between departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to move forward, but try to quicken your pace. Since the Omaha operation started a decade ago there's been a lack of growth and opportunities. Experienced individuals, who are desperately needed, leave once they realize they can't advance.

Training needs to be flipped on its head and redone. Hire another trainer and another quality assurance rep. People are provided incorrect information in an old school fashion (word puzzles? really?) and then thrown on the phones. Over the last year methods have been improved but it still has a long way to go.

    Pros

The compensation and benefits package is very attractive! Vacation time is also very generous which is why many people stay at this company.

    Cons

The Information Technology department has a toxic environment. Co-workers back stab and point fingers. It is not a team environment even though they claim to be a collaborative agile department. Employees withhold information and their is no attempt to cross train so that others can learn and alleviate the silo mentatilty. Managers do not trust their employees and do not listen to them. They only trust management. Trust issues run rampant throughout the department. Inappropriate behavior is acceptable by management and staff. If you are looking to grow and learn, do not work here. They rarely promote or give opportunities for growth. It is a very sad environment. After working elsewhere, I can look back and realize how bad it really is there. Current employees stay for their vacation time and excellent benefits. This company attracts great people but can't keep them so don't be fooled!!

Politics and personal agendas run rampant at this company

    Pros

Compensation package is good, knowledgeable coworkers, and flexible schedule.

    Cons

Middle management fosters a culture of back biting and negativity. They discuss employee performance with their employees' peers and they criticize performance without fully understanding the situation. In addition, some of the management staff are unprofessional and behave inappropriately. They talk a lot about values and culture, but that's where it ends. They do not trust employee knowledge and spend loads of money on vendor help that isn't needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are valuing the wrong employees!! Hard work, perseverance and results are not valued as much as blowing your horn in front of the right people.

    Pros

    Great benefits and competitive pay.
The company celebrates its accomplishments with its employees.
There is an annual bonus based on company performance.
Opportunities to learn are available, but you have to position yourself for them.

    Cons

Career development is not a priority.
Lack of consistent and accurate communication between management and associates.
Not enough employees to cover the work in certain areas of the company.
    Managers lack development.
Lessons are often not learned and broken processes tend to be part of the end product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop all of your employees, including managers. It seems like managers are there to manager the work at the expense of the employees. Realize that overqualified or unhappy employees will leave if their needs, outside the company benefits, are not met.

    Pros

People that you work with are very good

    Cons

Management does not engage their staff
Too many decisions are top down

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is too much focus on operations and no time allowed for creative out of the box thinking by the staff.
Stop having the appearance of engagement - either do it or quit pretending - it's discouraging to your teams.

    Pros

Great growth potential for this company. Most employees are friendly, hard working and dedicated. Great leadership in some departments.

    Cons

Low pay for many in professional positions. All managers are evaluated by employees, but officers are not. Weak and abusive leaders in the officer ranks are not held accountable for their behavior and employees suffer. Little concern given to relatively high turnover. Little to no development opportunities in many areas. No formal structured succession planning. No work life balance. Very much a face time culture. Results matter less than hours spent at one's desk.

I have been working at AAA Life Insurance Company full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Underwriting is great if you are a top personal producer. As mentioned, the pay was very good in the beginning but......

    Cons

Top management in the Northern CA club does not have a clue how to run the life insurance side. In 8 years, they have changed compensation plan for life agents 7 times --- at the expense of their agents. Meanwhile, hiring middle managers in their district office to supervise life agents. These managers does not even have any experience selling life insurance and most of them does not even have a life license. When they see their top life agents make a lot of bonus commission, they re-structure the comp plan immediately so life agents do not make more than the president and CEO of the club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One worst thing you could do to salespeople is to mess up their comp plan. You cannot entice them with one only to reduce their comp in less than a year. There are only 24 hours in a day. If a top salesperson is spending 12-14 hour days to make a very good income and the bonus structure is cut in such a way that one has to work twice as hard to make the same amount of money he/she made the previous year, it is WRONG. An individual's quality of life is very important. I just heard thru the grapevine that P and C agents renewal commission were recently removed. That is so very wrong. Employees are a company's biggest asset. Never treat them as an expense. Although they had advertise that AAA is a non-profit, why do they keep on messing the sales peoples comp. Is it in exchange for top executive bonuses? Please take care of your foot soldiers.

    Pros

Some very nice employees in the midwest.

    Cons

Underwriting has the power in this company and drives the business using a strict software guided customer approval process that rejects and downgrades a high percentage of applicants. Always playing catch-up with other insurers. Terriible marketing and field support. Customer contact is discouraged. Attitude that the customer is basically dishonest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should give frontline staff the flexibility and support to make decisions. Top-down business model designed to benefit top management at the expense of employees, agents and customers.
