Company with great potential but growth is slowed by inner fighting among senior management

    Pros

Good company with tremendous global opportunity. Has a good reputation in the payment space. Great place to gain knowledge of payments. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

    Cons

Senior management team that is not cohesive and in constant flux. This culture is actually encouraged by the CEO who seems to be more comfortable dividing the team and restructuring every 9-12 months so he can feel secure about his position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a new CEO and build an executive team that is cohesive and works with (instead of against) each other.

    Pros

The day-to-day work can be quite challenging and you can learn a lot. Personal networking opportunities abound. If you do your job well, you can last a long time. Company is flexible regarding PTO. If you are just out of college it is a good place to get your foot in the door of the payments industry. There is a great sense of camaraderie amongst teams.

    Cons

Be prepared to subordinate your personal life to the company. You must be able to deal with constant change proactively. Sub-par software and support. A cumbersome, lumbering bureaucracy. The frustration of collaborating with coworkers on another continent who are held to a different (lower) standard of accountability than you are, even though you work for the same company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The belated effort to improve employee morale isn't working as well as you think it is. Actions speak louder than words.

    Pros

The company has a very Impressive global client base and is a key player in the electronic payments software space. There are many very experienced, talented, hard-working employees who make a difference.

    Cons

Too short-term focused; frequently sacrifice client saltisfaction for short-term revenue gains; too much 'stick' and not enough 'carrot'...both with clients and employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conduct objective employee and client surveys (using a third party) and develop a company-wide action plan to make necessary improvements; monitor and report progress.

    Pros

Casual work atmosphere and convenient location.

    Cons

Lack of employee support, training, and employee respect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please concentrate on motivating employees to keep up with their job duties (i.e. work more on support tickets and less on goofing off watching YouTube and talking about their World of Warcraft exploits, certain employees know that the management has no teeth and they are using the situation to their advantage.

A comfortable place to end your career, but the end may come a lot sooner than you expect.

    Pros

ACI is well positioned and widely recognized within its industry and is in possession of a good cash flow engine: the POS (Point of Sale) terminal network. Prior to 2008, ACI had had a good record of employee retention and was growing rapidly, albeit mostly by acquisition. The benefits package is comprehensive - not outstanding but at least competitive with what you'd find elsewhere. Most ACI products were well established and actually in use by real paying customers with real money on the line, which can be a real upside for those who tend to sell their souls to projects that never see the light of day.

    Cons

Rapid expansion means there is no corporate culture to speak of. Once acquired, new divisions may be left to rot while senior management pursues its expansionist agenda. In the trenches, focus is on cost containment, not on achievement or excellence. Ironically, the bureaucratic policies which stifle innovation actually wind up making everything take longer and cost more. The twin polices of growth though acquisition and cost containment mean that career advancement opportunities are limited, unless you are an immigrant from India and favored to supervise all the development work that all got moved overseas.

All these problems became even more exaggerated by the 2008 financial meltdown, of course.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The party's over. It's no longer possible to grow a great company from cheap money, if indeed it ever was.
