I worked at ACT (Iowa City) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some really smart, good people that I enjoyed working with at ACT. Work/life balance is a strong incentive. Beautiful workplace and grounds.

    Cons

HR is not supportive of employees, and mine is only one of many stories about heavy-handed management that won't tolerate those with new or different ideas. The conservative nature of ACT will be its undoing. They haven't been cutting edge for a long time, and because they only promote the "yes" people, they won't have the benefit of the fresh ideas that were once the mainstay of the business growth. Too many people in management are making decisions about things for which they have no expertise, and not relying on the true experts to inform and guide their effort. The result is that projects are not efficient and well done as they could be.

    Advice to Management

Empower the experts--not the managers, but the real experts. You've just laid off 80 people with little discretion in a "baby with the bath tub" fashion. VPs made decisions about layoffs without knowing the real value of the people and work that was going on. Why not cut income for the highest management so you can support a broader base of employees?

I have been working at ACT (Iowa City) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good and wide arrangement of benefits. Flexible hours and work from home opprotunities. New workout facility.

    Cons

Very top heavy. Very siloed in both nature and structure. To many hands in the cookie jar related to ACT's vision. Not one central thought or path. No trust in own employees. Would rather trust consultants.

    Advice to Management

Listen to to people on the ground. They are your best assets. You will never find somebody more committed or believe in the cause then your most valued employees.

I have been working at ACT (Iowa City) full-time

    Pros

Excellent work/life balance - 37.5 hr work week Good benefits - recent addition of maternity leave, wellness center, personal days, floating holidays Beautiful campus - trails, pond, and prairie Strong mission - helping advance education and careers Incoming CEO - anticipated to be a very strong leader

    Cons

Transition and transformation are always a challenge, and the whole assessment industry is under pressure. ACT is an established and very cautious organization that needs to transform itself, and is still trying to figure out how to best do that. There are plenty of opportunities to better define roles, increase collaboration, and introduce accountability for specific results. Recent 6% downsizing (Aug of '15) has created some fear and frustration across the organization.

    Advice to Management

Every manager/executive must define clear goals and distinct responsibilities, hire a great team, and then empower, trust, and serve their team members - but everyone must be held accountable for delivering specific results. Human capital is more important than money in the bank.

I have been working at ACT (Iowa City) full-time

    Pros

ACT has a mission you can feel good about supporting--helping people achieve education and workplace success--strong products, many excellent team members, outstanding benefits, and a beautiful main campus. There are opportunities for professional development. The company has a well-earned reputation for quality and integrity.

    Cons

ACT has made strong progress in HR practices over the past few years but still struggles to make solid hiring decisions. Personnel issues are not always addressed in the most constructive manner.

    Advice to Management

Continue developing career pathways for team members and addressing problems with managers in order to retain strong employees.
