I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Always working with smart people. Everyone cares about getting the job done and delivering to the customer.

Company struggles at times to embrace modern software techniques and practices

I worked at ADTRAN (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Phoenix division was an excellent place to work. It was a challenging and fun work experience while it lasted. Excellent work/life balance. A very good management and a a good team environment..

    Cons

It was all work and very little emphasis on employee training. We could have done with a lot more training

I worked at ADTRAN (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company culture is very team oriented, you get a mentor as an intern or co-op, but your entire team will become an invaluable resource. If you are a student looking to have a great internship or co-op, this is a great place to do it.

    Cons

There is basically no upward mobility in terms of salary and promotions. You could possibly be there in the same salary range for a while.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the internships and co-op opportunities and move the entire development unit towards collaborative workspaces.

    Pros

Enjoyed my time at Adtran. Lots of great people there and the engineers I worked with we 're top notch.

    Cons

Little oppurtunity for advancement outside of putting in decades with the company

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

great hours (4/10's with possible OT), beautiful campus, friendly and helpful managers, great food in the cafeteria, monthly birthday parties for employees (one day of each month employees born in that particular month got excused from work to go to a 30min "party" with the CEO and have cake).

    Cons

very dated computers and programs (it was 2010 and we were using Windows 95)

    Advice to Management

Hopefully by 2015, they have updated the OS, but if they haven't: Spend a little money on updating employee computers on the testing floor. Yes, Windows 95 may still work for logging in hours and running product tests, but come on. . . an update would make those tests run a lot faster & would save the company money & time.

    Pros

Nice facilities, the main campus has a café, gym, and the grounds are well kept. Very good culture where the co-workers are friendly and the managers are laid back towards the ones working for them. Very successful company that has been profitable since its start in 1985.

    Cons

Not a lot of chances for moving up into a higher paying position. The raises for the last 5-6 years have been subpar.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere. Almost too laid back. Get the job done and you may never see your boss. Technically challenging. Always something new to work on. Open door policy so you can get information from just about anyone about anything.

    Cons

Get the job done and you may never see your boss. I did list this as a pro, but it can be a negative. I've been here 7 years and talked with my manager about 10 times. Talked to my boss's boss about twice. No movement. It will take 15 years and everyone in your group to leave before you are promoted.

    Advice to Management

Move your engineers around or they will leave. Its not about the money, its about keeping the minds working. Working on different projects. The ones that know the job, promote.

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good company environment that is very stable and operations are great. Traditionally rather laidback and opportunistic place to work. Family oriented. Flexible work hours are a nice perk. Also, the management chain appears to be genuinely concerned about the state of their people. They work with you when life happens. Paid educational benefits. Employment benefits are excellent Company administers its own insurance operations which is a super saver on benefits. Upper management exemplify great leadership and employee turnover one of the lowest in the industry.

    Cons

HUntsville locations does not offer a lot of access to Customer sites and only one telecom company essentially for at least 100 miles. Engineering is pretty flat so there is very little room for advancement. Compensation is a little below average, but this probably due to the fact that most engineers have been here for 10 to 20 years. This will not be the case in the future since churn has increased considerably since I left the company in 2011. Very few leave due to being unhappy with work conditions. They usually leave for better paying positions.

    Advice to Management

Compensate your engineers. Don't follow the current trend of micro-management in the name of Agile. Find that compensate level that make employees push product development out faster without foster compensation decline.
