I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Family atmosphere. While there is some stress to get the job done, employee-employee and employee-management relations could not be better. Very enjoyable work environment.
Very talented engineering team, everyone pulls their share.
Management is conservative (long history of profitability) and accessible.
    Traditionally low turnover.
    Excellent facilities.

    Cons

Growth has slowed compared to 10 years ago and the workforce is still relatively young making promotion opportunities hard to come by.
Benefits aren't bad, but for a company that prides itself on hiring the "best & brightest", overall compensation is a little low.

I worked at ADTRAN as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

-One of the few big non-defense companies in town.
    -Solid engineering folks.

    Cons

-Huntsville is a small city. As such, it is very boring for someone from a larger city.

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Clean buildings and very laid back company.

    Cons

Management and HR are inconsistant with the company policy. The policy is what ever they want it to be at any given time and with any given employee. The maufacturing management team will not stand up for you,or at least not some. Management both manufacturing and HR are not very professional, but yet they tell you that you need to be. Management talks bad about other comnpanies and they have not worked anywhere but ADTRAN, so how do they know. Not professional in my opinion. Some managers hide information from the employees because they do nopt want the employees to use the program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All managers should have the same policy. You work for the same company. Stop hideing information from the employees. Be honest with your employees. They help the company make money.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice facilities, some good perks if you are in the Huntsville office (on-site gym and nurse). Traditionally, they were a stable place and rather laid back.

    Cons

There is no clear direction coming from management and the only thing that seems to matter is the Wall St bottom line. Everyone is overworked and being tasked to do more with less. Morale is pretty shot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with a clear vision to take the company forward. Invest in your people, new technology, new ideas to turn the company around.

    I worked at ADTRAN

    Pros

    Large offices. Cafeteria is decent.

    Cons

The company although being in technology and a high growth sector is very conservative in terms of its investment policy. Projects are undertaken and are pursued half heartedly. Has a small under funded engineering team spread too thin across multiple sectors. Management looks to spread its feet in every possible sector without adequate investment. Has outdated technology in several areas. Future isn't too bright based on the technology roadmap for the organization, already facing intense competition in several areas.

Also if you move to Huntsville, remember this is the only telecom company for hundreds of miles. Better to rent than to buy property here. There is not much going on in HSV.

I have been working at ADTRAN

    Pros

ADTRAN is a stable engineering-driven company, and it's staffed with professional, sane, reasonable people with normal interests and families and lives. If you live in the Huntsville area you can probably appreciate that. People are exceptionally helpful and friendly, and the facilities are beautiful. Everyone gets their own office with a view. The campus is large with many beautifully manicured acres and a large lake surrounded by the two towers. Even the cafeteria serves exceptional food at very fair prices.

The pay is average for the area--good for the South, not quite as rich as the defense contractors pay.

    Cons

In order to attain promotions you must be driven and committed to excellence, meet deadlines, and at some level you are responsible for making yourself visible to your management. Not that being driven to excellence is a con at all, but ADTRAN is large enough that visibility can be an issue. The management doesn't focus too much on formalisms, and as such, the review process can be lacking. Feedback is hard to come by unless you interact regularly with peers and your management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the review process seriously. Continue to invest in your engineers and technical staff through on-site educational opportunities. Give specific feedback regularly, and set some clearly defined goals. You might be surprised what people can do when they're sufficiently challenged.
