Company's vision has changed over the years and not geared toward the Environmental Consulting side of the business.

I have been working at AECOM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Made some good friends with my co-workers and have learned a lot from their years of experience.

    Cons

Lack of career advancement and the company rather you learn how to do a job while you are on it then actually getting training on it prior to the job. They are more worried about people being billable then actually having us develop and further our careers. Work-life balance doesn't exist.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a lack of leadership as you go up the ladder and the gap between senior management and the people who they manage is huge. So in other words once the senior managers retire the group will be in complete trouble since they never hire people or promote from within.

I worked at AECOM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are a number of great opportunities for mid-level engineers and scientists. The projects and clients are varied and there are a number of great opportunities for good performers. Once you are looking to be more than a mid-level professional, it is time to move to another company. The pay is generally good.

    Cons

As AECOM alone this was a very large and slow moving machine. With the addition of URS, this will be a very, very large and very slow moving machine. Rewards for doing a great job will be a 3% raise!!!

I have been working at AECOM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Access to large projects. A good percentage of the company's workforce are intelligent, motivated people. Compensation is fair, work-life balance is decent.

    Cons

Management is top-heavy and very out of touch with market. Opportunities for salary advancement is limited. Constant focus on acquisition of other firms leaves employees feeling unsettled, and unsure as to what their future with the company may be.

I have been working at AECOM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The projects and the people are great. The global nature of the company provides a unique set of experiences for staff. For up and coming engineers, designers, and architects, there are great experiences to be had. Just don't plan to make it a long term career here. Budget cuts and layoffs are an annual way of life.

    Cons

The CEO is an accountant and the newly named President is an accountant, but it's not an accounting firm. The bean counters are running one of the world's largest architecture and engineering firms, and they're doing it like... accountants. Since the new management team took control, diversity has gone out the window. Women in leaderships positions have been fired, forced to retire, or left voluntarily. Diversity on the new management team consists of white males who have hair and white males who are bald. Check out the website and you'll see. Google why Michael Burke left KPMG. The pay is generally below market. A lot of fear and intimidation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Back up the great videos and internal marketing with action. Stop getting rid of anyone who is diverse. Take note that Finance is there to serve the operations; it's not the other way around. As another review noted, the Board of Directors needs to step in.

    I worked at AECOM

    Pros

Free parking at suburban locations and free coffee

    Cons

Poor communication and no clear goal setting and leadership from top heavy management level. The pattern is to buy competition, milk their contracts in return for bare minimum service, and move on. Reporting a great dividend at the next shareholder meeting is the top priority. Like Walmart, they come into town, devour smaller quality firms, and belch out some quick profits. The talented folks in the middle doing the actual work get squeezed and tossed aside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at your human resources with appreciation rather than contempt.

    Pros

Great engineering opportunities, top infrastructure projects

    Cons

CEO fired the new Human Resources Director after only 3 months on the job, a week before the URS merger closed. He was the fourth Human Resources Director in four years.
General Counsel slot vacant for 18 months. New GC appointed in November. End of November he announces he's leaving.

    I worked at AECOM

    Pros

There can be a lot of interesting national and international projects to work on and there are many talented people who work there.

    Cons

Company is bottom line driven. Cares little for employees and favors profitability over client service. Management is a train wreck.

I have been working at AECOM

    Pros

AECOM provides ample opportunity to develop a broad range of skills including operational skills if one has a desire to do so. There is a lot of flexibility provided to staff, including global mobility, and the company experiences tremendous change. One's mindset determines whether the change is viewed as an obstacle or opportunity for development (I choose the latter). Great people in the company working at the ground level, great benefits and very competitive salaries.

    Cons

As a large company, the bureaucracy can be difficult and overwhelming, not to mention all consuming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More women in positions of leadership would be a good move.
