    Pros

The work is interesting and engaging. There are many good people.

    Cons

Employee morale suffers due to feeling disenfranchised. Most younger employees seek other more progressive employers and most older employees are seeking a 'buy-out'for retirement. There are few middle-management skills worthy of emulating.

    Advice to Management

The highest upper management is skilled but have recently imposed a 'new' salary scale which has effectively imposed great limitations on promotion beyond a 2% yearly increase, siting other Utility company wages, rather than Engineering companies, for similar job functions and responsibilities.

    Pros

Good medical plan but lousy dental and vision. The monthly costs you pay for the dental and vision coverage doesn't cover enough on certain procedures, you end up paying a large out of pocket sum.

    Cons

Management is top heavy, one employee could have up to four supervisors at any time and with neither of them communicating with each other, confusion is always present. Most managers and supervisors have been given their positions by the "who you know" method and not by education or experience. The company continues to downsize to the point of overworking employees and enforcing a completion time for projects with minimum employees performing the work. This creates dangerous situations and impedes safety practices and if an accident does occur the employee is terminated. They say they have a "stop work" program, but if you invoke this practice the supervisors become infuriated and create inappropriate jobs for you to accomplish. They are only there to fill their pockets, not perform a service to the community.

    Advice to Management

Train you managers better or send them packing

Promotions are vague across the board. Promotions are based on how good your direct supervision is at fighting for you.

    Pros

Great benefits, good pay, lots of perks

    Cons

Management is grappling with how to compete in markets that were regulated for more than 100 years. Company will continue to downsize as it deals with shrinking margins and high overhead. Senior management makes decisions based on extremely superficial analyses performed by outside consultants who have no clue about what they're doing.

    Advice to Management

Making employees go through re-education programs to try to improve the culture won't help when the cultural issues begin on the 30th floor of 1 Riverside Plaza.

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Large company with many career opportunities.

    Cons

Large company where it is hard to get noticed for accomplishments and promotions.

    Advice to Management

Focus on growing the in house employees first before hiring consultants and contractors.

    Pros

AEP is a huge company that offers a variety of positions for people of many backgrounds. Successful employees tend to work a few years in one role, and then transfer internally to learn a new area. I enjoyed AEP's way of communicating with the employees, and I always felt I understood the company's strategy. AEP is generous with maternity leave, military leave and many benefits.

    Cons

Maybe it is typical of a large organization, but there are many HR rules about pay grades, raises and promotions that limit management's ability to reward top performers. Therefore, it sometimes feels like the best way to "catch up" is to apply for another job -- internally or externally.
