I have been working at AHCA full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work for starting out your career. Good starting salaries and great benefits. Great people who know a lot about their job material.

    Cons

It's easy to get stuck working for the state and can get pretty boring. It's good to constantly look for new opportunities and change to keep yourself interested.

I have been working at AHCA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    • AHCA has an excellent work environment.
    • The work done at AHCA is interesting and has the potential to positively affect health care choices in Florida.
    • AHCA provides very flexible work schedules for individuals seeking college degrees and individuals with young children.
    • Employees seeking graduated degrees (non-professional degrees, e.g. MBA, Law) can receive state tuition waivers for up to six semester hours each semester.
    • The benefits are excellent and quite affordable.
    • AHCA’s leave policy is generous, new employees receive up 13 vacation days and 13 sick days annually, which roll over each year. Total annual leave days increase after five and ten years of state government service. Employees are allowed to keep up to 9 weeks of vacation leave and an unlimited amount of sick leave. Employees also receive one personal day per year.

    Cons

    • Advancement may be limited for some job classes.
    • Each job promotions require a one year probationary period.
    • Salaries are much less than comparable private sector salaries.
    • Cost of living raises are dependent upon approval by the governor and state legislature.
    • Merit raises are difficult to negotiate because of budgetary constraints.

I worked at AHCA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Processes in place that could ensure adequate care to all citizens utilizing government funds for care.

    Cons

Staff not allowed enough training prior to going into field without mentor. Both field office supervisory staff and headquarter administrative staff fail to apply all state and federal regulations across the board. Many times politically favored facilities are not held accountable. When long time surveyors identify noncompliance in one of the favored facilities, the citations are deleted by administration regardless of solid and undeniable documentation supporting the noncompliance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps there should be actual "Medically Trained" administrative staff guiding the Agency for Healthcare Administration, ie; physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists.

I have been working at AHCA

    Pros

Basically this is a State job and everyone knows the pros and cons. You will have relative security with keeping your job, but you will not be paid like in the private sector. Also, the benefits are not bad for providing for a family.

    Cons

You don't really have anywhere to go and grow within the Agency. There are a lot of lateral moves. Also, you only learn how to do the work here once you get on... so you basically have to start from the bottom up because the programs and applications that are used are not very transferable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would tell management to pay attention their employees more and not think they are above them. There is a lot of red tape and useless protocol. The agency would be a lot more productive if the management coult think like the private sector does. There needs to be motivation.

can get boring day in and day out doing same thing
    hardly no recognition

I have been working at AHCA

    Pros

Good benefits. Agency is mostly laid-back, business casual dress. Some positions, like mine, allow a for a variable work week. I work 4-10 hours days and have every Friday off. Not a high pressure environment, overall decent work environment.

    Cons

Pay is low compared to private sector. As with most state jobs, it's not how much you know as much as WHO you know. Not much reward based on performance. Pretty much never any raises. Would have to change positions to get a raise with the State. Good for stable income, but bad if you expect to "work your way up".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Holly Benson is doing a good job. No complaints about upper senior management. Most complaints are of direct supervisors

I have been working at AHCA

    Pros

This is a great job- friendly people to work with. Nothing bad to say at all.

    Cons

No cons that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

AHCA has not given a raise for quite a while- I think 8 years. This is something I would def. like to see happen.
