I have been working at AHRC Nassau

    Pros

The most rewarding work a person can do! Amazing benefits ! Helps pay for school and great experience in the medical field.

    Cons

Can be very stressful! Every house is unique to work for so some have better experiences than others. High turnover rate. A lot of people transfer around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show more appreciation towards staff! It is a very stressful job and appreciation is needed to motivate staff to be the best they can be.

    Pros

Work hard, and it is an easy way to work your way up to Senior Management.

    Cons

Senior Management needs to get more involved with day to day activities. Some of the programs are just unorganized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better Pay, More Vacation options/Time off, and training.

Reality of working in the agency is so different from what I thought it would be.

I have been working at AHRC Nassau full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great, amazing benefits!
Working with clients and getting to know them on a personal level. Watching the progress they make and experiencing their triumphs with them.

    Cons

The pay, low company morale, budget cuts, layoffs, no raise in more than 4 years just to start. Overworked and undervalued. Managers and Assistant Managers are expected to complete work from home if they cannot complete it during work hours or remain late. UNPAID!!
Troubled/bad staff are rarely terminated. Just administratively moved. And then the vicious cycle begins all over again.
Jobs are not always posted for internal applicants when they become available. Often interviews are a farce as the powers that be already know in advance of interviews who they want to hire.
If you speak up at meetings and complain or suggest changes you are often penalized for it. (i.e. no future promotions, suddenly you can do nothing right and are issued supervisions, etc.)
Bottom line the people we are hired to assist are the true victims.

    Pros

Good benefits and coworkers. Decent amount of flexibility within the organization. Some opportunities for professional development advancement. Overall, it's a decent place
    To work.

    Cons

For such a demanding job, not enough money or advancement. They didn't seem very concerned with how things got done, just that they did.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Proofread your memos- especially the ones that go out to parents. Who could forgot the "American Idle" unfortunate mishap.

    Pros

Adult program is the place to be if you are low energy. You can move up over time and internally. Large company. Health benefits, paid vacation and sick time. They will help you go to school after some time at the job as well. (Up to 5000 a year I believe.)

    Cons

Teen/child program can be dangerous to your health. I've had many co-workers injured and they tell you this on the interview and throughout training. Large males expect to be paired with the rougher population. As far as I know there is no union, and upper management counts on burnout as part of their business model so people move on if they are unhappy. There is no union so the pay is not a live-able wage until you reach salary positions or work tons of overtime which could again cause burnout or injury due to the nature of the job.

There is nepotism and due to this being a high stress job drama as well. There is a huge disconnect in what the main offices hear and what goes on at the sites. Rather than problem employees being fired they are usually moved to another site. Seemed like there were some people as well who liked to say they worked with the population but didn't know the names of the residents who lived in the houses they managed.

There are abuse hotlines and hotlines to report workplace mismanagement but they seem to be directly reported to the lead position on site. Not much use when the problem is the person problems are reported to. In my time if anything I've seen more policy on deterring whistle-blowing than helping staff in daily activities.

    Pros

It's a job, can sort of help you pay a few bills, there's a few in each town

    Cons

Poor management, claims to care for individuals & staff but does otherwise, rude & disrespectful employees, favoritism, racist, sugarcoat nonsense, false claims, poor pay rate, few advancements, barely any incentives, poor use of individuals money, a lot of stuff swept under the rug, group/residents/workshops/homes dirty, so on & so forth
