I have been working at AHRC Nassau full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Adult program is the place to be if you are low energy. You can move up over time and internally. Large company. Health benefits, paid vacation and sick time. They will help you go to school after some time at the job as well. (Up to 5000 a year I believe.)

    Cons

Teen/child program can be dangerous to your health. I've had many co-workers injured and they tell you this on the interview and throughout training. Large males expect to be paired with the rougher population. As far as I know there is no union, and upper management counts on burnout as part of their business model so people move on if they are unhappy. There is no union so the pay is not a live-able wage until you reach salary positions or work tons of overtime which could again cause burnout or injury due to the nature of the job.

There is nepotism and due to this being a high stress job drama as well. There is a huge disconnect in what the main offices hear and what goes on at the sites. Rather than problem employees being fired they are usually moved to another site. Seemed like there were some people as well who liked to say they worked with the population but didn't know the names of the residents who lived in the houses they managed.

There are abuse hotlines and hotlines to report workplace mismanagement but they seem to be directly reported to the lead position on site. Not much use when the problem is the person problems are reported to. In my time if anything I've seen more policy on deterring whistle-blowing than helping staff in daily activities.

    I worked at AHRC Nassau

    Pros

Extreme Flexibility. Great place to do research. They have a strong work ethic ad value system. Diverse workforce that you have the opportunity to interact with.

    Cons

There is absolutely no direction. You can work as little or as much as you want. If you have an issue it is hard to get someone to help you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more structure to the intern program. Once interns are there make sure that they are working. Provide more oversight to the program.

I have been working at AHRC Nassau

    Pros

    Admirable mission
More often than not people try to deliver quality service to the target customers
    Lots of non-traditional schedules
    Overtime potential

    Cons

Inconsistency between actions towards customers & employees (do not treat employees fairly)
The culture is somewhat oppressive/doesn't promote advancement of minorities
Promotion is often based on which clique you belong to versus on-the-job performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The promotion opportunities for minorities is limited few make it pass entry-level management to Program Administration/coordination level, regardless of ambition or aptitude.
