    Pros

Great working environment. Good opportunities for advancement. On site cafeteria.

    Cons

High turnover in my department. High pressure position. Unrealistically high expectations for employee review.

    Advice to Management

Bear in mind that you've headquartered the business in Durham, NC, where people speak like the southerners they are, and don't score your call center reps down for using southern words like y'all and gonna.

    Pros

Excellent people, I can't say enough about how great most of the people are that work there. However, a few rotten apples spoil the bunch.

    Cons

Beware of accepting a role with the title of "Manager" as they have many management roles that have no direct reports, no influence on budget in your department, and no real ability to influence strategy in your department. Also, they boast flexible work arrangements, but you're not eligible for this until the end of your 120 probationary period. If you need this from the beginning of your employment, be sure to get that in writing, and do NOT accept anything you're TOLD as true in the recruiting process. Also, be ready to pay for two monthly medical premiums up front before your benefits begin. If you accepted a "sign on bonus" be ready to watch it disappear after taxes and that double medical premium is deducted.

The office politics can be vicious if you attempt to change anything they think is good enough. Be aware of relationships people have there. Their friendships run deep, and out of the office. If you're not in their clique, you will not advance, and introducing new ideas will not be well received.

I've never written a review about a previous employer, however after my experience here, this place earned my review. Shame on you AICPA for pandering to nepotism and archaic processes, and leaders who cannot see the forest for the trees.

Benefits are average at best, and salaries are below market averages, but hey it's a not for profit institution.

    Advice to Management

This advice is aimed directly to the CEO and those who report to him. Get more involved in "how" those who report to you get the job finished. You're revenues of old will not sustain you're future viability, and those below you cannot change fast enough to see a new vision through.

    Pros

AICPA has the ambition and drive of a for-profit organization. There's a commitment to following best practices and to continuous improvement. Attractive offices. Some have good work/life balance, but it varies by role and department. Good benefits, time off and HR policies.Top

    Cons

Politics can sometimes get in the way of progress. The drive for growth in every area leads to people being spread too thin and competing priorities.

    Advice to Management

Top level could be more focused on serving members and empowering employees.

    Pros

Depending on the department/team, can be very laid-back. A minority of employees are very driven, competent individuals that I truly enjoyed working with.

    Cons

The AICPA has unbelievably inefficient and archaic processes, and few people seem motivated to change this. People at all levels are not held accountable for their actions, and anyone that has stuck with the company long enough seems content with this. People that have been around for years are comfortable, not challenged. This is probably why anyone offering new insight or appearing to "rock the boat" is seen as a threat. There are a handful of people with great, innovative ideas but they are totally stifled by the culture.

Also, the morale is depressing. People seem despondent or apathetic. You get the sense that your colleagues also do not like their jobs... Small talk is rare. It's as if no one cares to get to know each other. New faces in the office are not even acknowledged, and part of this is due to how many temps they have. You don't know if the new face you see will still be there a few months later, so you don't take the chance to get to know them.

You can only stay sane if you don't attempt to make a real impact on the processes and can be content as a mindless little worker bee.

    Advice to Management

    You need consultants. Badly.

Take your employees' ideas seriously. You can't expect them to stick around if you don't honor their contribution and abilities.

    Pros

    • The AICPA is very good at promoting and advancing the CPA profession
    • Good benefits
    • Great co-workers
    • Opportunity for advancement if you are patient and understand the political dynamics
    • Flexible work schedules
    • Nice and secure office buildings
    • Staff diversity

    Cons

    • Overall culture has been on a steady decline for the past few years and doesn't appear to be improving
    • Pay is below average
    • You are expected to check and respond to emails at night and on weekends, which degrades your work-life balance
    • The environment is highly political among senior level staff where narcissism is common
    • The lack of training and development for staff and management causes a lot of confusion and mistakes
    • Employees are paralyzed by senior management and not allowed to make decisions
    • The focus is solely on generating revenue instead of supporting customer base and staff development
    • Senior management consistently over-commits, which puts the staff in unnecessary high pressure situations and this appears to be due to either a lack of respect for individual contributors and lower management or bad judgement
    • Favoritism is rampant and this inequality is evident to all staff, which causes mistrust and low morale
    • Staff is quickly threatened, oppressed, and placed on performance plans when a mistake or misunderstanding occurs instead of being trained and mentored (leadership by instilling fear)
    • High turnover of valuable and longstanding employees is evident of a deteriorating culture
    • There is a lack of coordination and trust between teams, which causes unnecessarily confusion and rework

Once you are in the environment for a while, you will begin to see the patterns. The culture has turned due to bad judgement, poor leadership, lack of accountability, and the blame game. This has been going on for some time and will continue until new leadership is introduced and instills a different philosophy. Working at the AICPA is what you make it. There are good things and there certainly are bad things. I'm looking for a new opportunity and I hear that most others are doing the same.

    Advice to Management

Stay out of the weeds and learn to trust your staff.

I have been working at AICPA

    Pros

Nice smart people, relatively good work life balance. Good working environment.

    Cons

Multiple layers of hierarchy, rather formal, complicated to work through the organization, some teams are easy to work with while others are rather challenging and tend to be nitpicking.

    Pros

As a CPA, its a great place to be and help shape the future of the profession. The company has been fair and has provided opportunities for growth. I enjoy the people and opportunities to meet members and see how members can also get involved to shape the future of the profession. Everyone is trying to do the right thing and help members.

    Cons

As with any not-for-profit, limited resources can make it a challenge to do the things you want to do. Plus internal competing priorities make it tough. But you manage with what you have and do the best you can.

    Advice to Management

    None.

    Pros

Nice job, could leave it at the door.

    Cons

Salary and benefits are not on par with big companies.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to act like the AICPA is a fortune 500 company. Accept it for what it is and stop trying to aim for the sky. You do not have the money or resources for that.
