Great leadership who wants you to be involved and encourages you to ask questions and will help you take your career to the next level.

    Cons

The inhouse Diner closes too early. A silly thing to list as a con but honestly thats the only thing I can think of

I have been working at AICPA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Good work - life balance
    Health-conscious diner on site

    Cons

Many in management are underhanded and spiteful. It seems that many of those who get promoted are the most obnoxious people at the company. Once a person is on a black list, he or she has little chance of getting back on track.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to work out personal grudges. Stop among sweeping changes that you will only have to back track on later.

I have been working at AICPA full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The tuition reimbursement program is a great add, along with the great health benefits.

    Cons

Change is great, but too many changes create confusion and chaos. Lately, so many changes occur that communication and morale suffer tremendously. New people, new roles, new processes, new programs, new teams...so much going on that it seems the only focus is meeting the next deadline.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should show care and genuine appreciation to teams and employees who consistently meet or exceed expectations. I suggest bonuses, raises, gift cards, and promotions instead of an increased workload, tighter deadlines, and an occasional pizza lunch.

I worked at AICPA full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great co-workers. Good flex time. Excellent benefits. Interesting work.

    Cons

C-level exec's and mid management are quite inexperienced, and insist on an arrogant top down management style.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you don't know - ask. Making decisions, and then trying to figure out why things went wrong can be avoided by first asking the experts you have working for you.

Frustrating! Many truly unfortunate circumstances that could have easily been avoided, or at worst handled with dignity

I worked at AICPA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Potential for great things based on strength of long standing membership base and respect built over the many years of such a strong presence in the industry. Strong institute set core beliefs and standards. Many good accountable people trying to lead and do the right thing to grow the institute without sacrificing professionalism, morals and ethics. Hopefully the deep frustration amongst team members caused by lack of accountability, communication and overall leadership was confined to the department I belonged to.

    Cons

Potential is there, however, some departments severely stifled by poor leadership from Senior Management. Deep seeded frustration amongst team members caused by lack of accountability, communication and overall leadership hopefully confined within department. Consistent unprofessional conduct by members of Senior Management resulting in severe lack of respect by reports and ultimately a complete loss of team morale. I personally have never felt such deep rooted disappointed in the people I reported to as I did when working for the AICPA. Many truly unfortunate circumstances that could have easily been avoided, or at worst handled with dignity and professionalism by skilled senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should practice what they preach and lead by example. Not everyone should manage people or has the necessary skills to manage effectively. More importantly leadership should be able to identify these people and prevent them from doing so. You can be good at your trade and not skilled to manage, and unfortunately this is the case in many instances within some of the departments. Executive Leadership needs to take more time when selecting Senior Management to ensure they are leaders who can be respected and have the ability to motivate a team and drive results. More direct focus needs to be put on growing management through the ranks and instilling the core values of the institute early on while working with the right people to ensure they become effective leaders and letting go of those who don't have it in them to lead effectively!

I worked at AICPA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The pay is great, and some of the people are great. Benefits are great, as well as time-off policies.

    Cons

A lot of office politics. Also a lot of what you are told is very misleading. You are "empowered" to make judgement calls, but when the time comes to be held accountable for those despite achieving the desired outcome in a positive manner, it may still be considered wrong and count against you. You are also tasked with solving a lot of problems the institute creates, I found the organization to be very disorganized. Also, the supervisors, those tasked with helping you, would never be around. They would frequently be in meeting 4-6 hours a day, making them completely unavailable. Which required excessive assistance from coworkers, who's advice may not prove to be completely accurate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be around more, and as an institute specifically Member Services, realize that not every call can follow a cookie cut model. Some require a difference in responses, found there was very very little from for improvisation.

I have been working at AICPA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Non-medical benefits are great and there are lots of opportunities to advance in the NC office. Salary is decent for a non profit.

    Cons

If you're not in the NC office, very little advancement opportunities. Everyone plays the internal politics game and they do not like anyone that rocks the boat. You basically have to brown-nose your way to the middle. Some teams hold their employees to high standards while other teams don't. There are people at the company who have skated by for 20+ years and there are others who are trying to make change and innovate, but can't due to the old ways. Horrible medical benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat each office location equally. Find the bad apples and eliminate them, i.e. those that spend all day playing office politics.
