I have been working at AIG (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most successful corporate turnaround in history of business, and the opportunity to truly shape the future if aig and insurance

    Cons

Too much to do. But, come on NYers, who isn't up for that challenge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train managers to manage and lead their people. Make that a core competency.

    Pros

Good Work/Life Balance: Good Time Off

    Cons

Lots of quiet large lay offs; constantly changing executive management plans; executives constantly providing promotional opportunities for themselves; lack of promotional opportunities or opportunities to move around the company laterally; lots of dead end departmental positions; executive management has no interest in knowing the real talent within all levels of the company and making sure they are in the right position rather than just performing lay offs; good salaries going in but lack of performance based increases (lots of "you performed exceptionally well this year but no one, but the executives, are getting raises this year".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Note the cons and don't be afraid of getting to know all levels of your staff especially your longtime employees (most of whom you have already laid off) because you are sending a lot of really talented people to your competition.

    I worked at AIG

    Pros

The program had a few bumps in the beginning, but everyone I worked with was extremely helpful and supportive. I really appreciate the network I was able to build.

    Cons

In the beginning the objective of the internship was not clear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure the team is ready and aware that they will have an intern for the summer -- meaning to have a defined project the intern will be able to complete during the internship.

    Pros

I have worked with some great people at AIG. There are always challenges and something new to do and learn. The work has been interesting.

    Cons

Management in the tax department is poor. Way too political. Too many people just trying not to make a mistake and afraid they will be fired. Over the years there have been too many consultants running the show.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get new management in the tax department. They have wasted millions and millions of dollars in transformation and have nothing to show for it.

    Pros

Benefits, vacation time, 401k and pension plan, stability

    Cons

No promotions, no raises to the base salary for years, extreme amount of work with limited amount of resources

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise a base salary! Short terms incentives are cut in half by taxes.

Amazing coworkers who work to help each other in the absence of good management. Benefits are good. Great 401K matching plan.

Provide no direction and make no attempt to understand the work. Very low employee morale. No raises.
