    Shift Manager

    Maintenance Shift Manager (Former Employee)
    Middletown, OH

ProsGood place to get a name on your resume first after college.

ConsThe hourly is union, so they are lazy, hostile, and egotistic. Also due to the union, you will not be working with anything directly, so you won't learn much. I suggest leaving no later than 2 years if you work with hourly.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should have settled for nothing less than the complete dissolution of the union. They are destroying your company. That is why Nucor is doing so much better.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsThere are no pros at all.

ConsUpper management will treat you like dirt. You have no say on what goes on. Ak Steel hires the dumbest guys they can for upper managment.

    Ak Tube survivor!

    Production (Former Employee)
    Walbridge, OH

ProsMoney is decent and they give tickets to ciderpoint.

ConsRidiculous safety rules resulting in no job security, bias in promotion, in your face disrespect by supervisors, frequent suspensions leading to loss of income, future health risk from inhaling coolant, weld fumes, generally horrible place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementSay what you mean and mean what you say. Warn employees what to expect in term of impossible to reach safety standards.

    well paid but little respect

    Maintenance Repair (Current Employee)
    Butler, PA

ProsGood pay for not having a college degree

ConsHarsh environment, shift work, employees input not valued

Advice to Senior ManagementWith a mature workforce ( average 20+ years) there is a lot of experience to draw from. Unfortunately because of the finger pointing atmosphere, many are afraid to try new ideas that may help the company. There is always the threat of "corrective action" if something is done wrong or if a mistake is made

Only a certain kind of person can handle the culture

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere is good pay and opportunity for advancement if you are the rare kind of person who can tolerate the cultural and literal atmosphere.

Cons- Corporate management was hired in without experience with company, leading to poor decision making and unrealistic goals.
    - Hourly employees treated poorly
    - Poor working conditions (long term health issues ignored)

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvance people through the company for management. Training programs!

I was not directly impacted with the management inequities, and was satisfied as an employee.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSteelmaking is a very interesting process. If you are interested in working on projects, there are many challenging and interesting opportunities to enhance the process. There are a number of unique positions, so if you like change you can fill a number of different roles while staying with the same company.

ConsIf you do no want to be micro managed, do not work for AK Steel. It is insane that a department manager responsible for 250+ employees has a purchase approval level of $2.00. If you do not want to do nothing more than record observations of people, then do not be a Shift Mgr. at AK Steel.

Advice to Senior ManagementEither trust and let your middle management manage, otherwise you might as well replace them with baby sitters at a much lower cost.
