I worked at ALS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of hours when there is work (summer). Great place to let a career go nowhere. Overly concerned with safety, they won't even allow Band-Aids in the lab, you have to see a "First-Aider" and fill out a report. I guess that's better than having no concern for safety, but not much.

    Cons

Short hours during winter, forced vacations. Management is incompetent - one manager yelled at some techs for something that turned out to not be their fault, NOTHING happened to the manager. ALL management is chosen from the ranks of long-time employees, no new blood ever. This leads to a very stagnant company culture. Poor business plans cause the company to miss budget goals quarter after quarter then the company tries to recover losses with low pay, not giving raises, and forcing people to take vacation and/or work short hours (except for management, of course). Professionals should not be treated like that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating your workers like cattle, take responsibility for YOUR poor decisions. It is NOT the workers fault when YOU fail to bring in work.

I have been working at ALS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

clean environment, nice people, beautiful area, safety conscious company.

    Cons

company is very big and tries to put every lab into the same mold.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

trust your people to do a good job without micromanaging them, charge enough for the work that it is profitable without running your employees into the ground.

I worked at ALS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I can't think of any reason to work there. Just maybe as an entry level training for the college graduates with no goals for career opportunities or good pay.

    Cons

They do not need your knowledge and professionalism. They do not care about quality and clients. They will lay you off if you are smarter, work better, longer, or paid well.

Managers are disrespectful, manipulative liars that will only defend and keep positions for their lovers, informers, and ass-kissers.

No career opportunities. HR are to help getting rid of people not to defend them. Very demoralizing and destructive environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Change ALL management.

I have been working at ALS full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you need a job, and they will give you one, well that might be as good as it gets. Benefits aren't bad. They do have a small 401k contribution.

    Cons

This is a soulless international corporation growing in North America via acquisitions. They are trying to become the lowest cost producer of environmental testing. That means they want to pay you squat, and keep you there as long as they can. If you are fresh out of college, get a couple of years experience and then go make real money somewhere else. The HR department is greatly behind the eight ball because they have grown too fast. The company focuses on customer satisfaction, but doesn't care for their workforce satisfaction. They don't realize you can't have one without the other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Paying new hires squat and having high turnover is going to sink your company in the long run as no talent is going to stay on board.

I worked at ALS as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

    Great co-workers
    Fun work atmosphere
Got good laboratory experience, helped me get my next job (which was much better)

    Cons

    Super high sample turnaround
    Always very busy
    Unrealistic employee expectations from management
    Low pay (~10 per hour)
Even with great performance reviews, they kept me on as a temporary worker for more than 2 years with no raise before I finally had enough and quit

I worked at ALS full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The co-workers are very nice. Nice break room.

    Cons

Every man for themselves atmosphere, career advancements taken away based on company needs, management rewards bad behavior, no training, old outdated instruments, no bonuses, cheap.

I have been working at ALS full-time

    Pros

Great work hours and benefits. Employees friendly; great team environment. Management lenient with PTO and vacation requests.

    Cons

Management a bit shaky at times. Not too many advancement opportunities. Usually prefer to hire for new positions within company.

I have been working at ALS full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pay is ok if you negotiate high pay when starting, manical focus on safety

    Cons

Hmm... where to start... Virtually NO training for vital tasks such as using the extremely complicated and cumbersome LIMS, focus on hours worked, not quality or amount of work produced, benefits are not very good and getting much more expensive, entrenched bureaucracy of long-time employees with little to no exposure to other companies, lab director allows managers to run their departments wildly differently, seasonal work means forced use of vacation time during winter paid if you want your full paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people in the trenches, you are badly disconnected from your workforce.

I worked at ALS full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

experience working with oil testing equipment

    Cons

Supervisors and managers don't honor their agreements, verbal or written. No training records were kept. The longer you are there, the harder they will try to get rid of you. Uncompromising 100% or you are a bad worker mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Correct the above cons!
