    Life at Alstom

Senior Manager (Former Employee) Windsor, CT

ProsGreat group of people to work with.
Many employees have been with the company for over 20 years.
Good work life balance in most areas.

ConsSlow to change as a result of many people having more than 20 years experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementSolicit more feedback from the local business units to see what is going on at the ground level of the organization.

    Alstom Grid

Project Manager (Current Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsThere are a large number of engineers, software designers, and project managers who have been here for 10 to 20 years. The upside is stability, once you're in and proven yourself.

ConsThe downside is how slow the organization adapts to new markets, new ideas, new people.

The age old battle between the sales & marketing group vs. the operations group is very pronounced. It's exasperated by the fact it's a matrix organization. Projects are rarely completed on time.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo proper estimates. Stop selling more than you can deliver.

    Great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chattanooga, TN

ProsGood place to get a great knowledge of manufacturing. Overall a great place to work, but it is a start up location so it has issues.

ConsI do not have to many down sides as of right now, but a lack of transfer of knowledge would be my only concern.

Advice to Senior ManagementPush for a transfer of knowledge from each location so that Alstom can have a corporate policy that is followed.

    Strange organization

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsNice people and building but in an inconvenient area with gridlock traffic coming in and going out on Willows Road. Cars are bumper-to-bumper and you have to drive to go anywhere for lunch other than the on-site restaurant.

ConsStill on Lotus Notes and entire IT part of company is really messed up and behind over 30 years. You have little to no guidance on getting to key areas as an employee with about 25 different log in links and passwords that aren't yours of choosing. It's an antiquated system and needs re-vamping. They keep saying they will change it but they never do. It's nearly impossible to work there and try to get things done. It's a really quiet place and you can hear a pin drop. It doesn't foster growth or imagination. You are locked out of most of the internet with their dated web browser security system. Don't even think of looking at Facebook or anything like that because you will be blocked.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet with the program and update your software and system for employees.

    Stable and polite.

Test Lead (Current Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsWorking in the steadily growing power systems management software industry allows me to balance my work and life better than internet software industry. It also is less stressful because things move slower at times and people are more concerned with quality because peoples lives are on the line.

ConsI am used to working in a fast paced internet industry and sometimes want to get things done now, but in this industry there are a lot of steps and processes to control quality and budgets.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone.

    Unsatisfactory

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsThe grid is being controlled by software which opens new opportunities for software professionals.

ConsIt is a conglomerate, and is a company loosely made of many companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is not your home office.

    Great place to work

Steam Turbine Engineer (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsGreat place to work with alot of roof for advancement if you show interest in developing yourself. Would recommend to anyone looking for an engineering job in Richmond.

ConsAs with any job in this industry, there are very busy spring and fall outage seasons. This sometimes makes getting time off difficult, but it is not impossible and it comes with the territory.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would improve upon the communication of organizational announcements, and also possible changes in line management. This would be my only advice.
