    Pros

Interesting work, good hours, free coffee, and reasonable management great coworkers

    Cons

Coworkers can be like groups of little high schooler's sometimes, employees like to wait until the last minute for things

    Pros

The majority of both hourly and salaried staff are very helpful. Project assignments felt like they could eventually come to fruition and benefit the company b

    Cons

Everything needed to either be approved by the corporate office in France or was dictated by them. On many projects it felt like the teams were just spinning their wheels.

    Advice to Management

Let the local support staff make more decisions for the local facility. Find a way to compress the timeframe of projects from inception to completion.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, yearly bonuses based on shop performance metrics, Cross training opportunities, time and a half overtime and double time on Sundays.

    Cons

Expect to work 3000+ hrs per year. Senior management uneducated and not supportive of shop floor personnel. Man-hour management is non existant. Many shifts and departments running under staffed with little time off during outage season.

    Pros

Multi-cultured work environment, challenging work environment because of its matrix organization, good prospects to move around the company.

    Cons

Too many levels of management who add no value to the business.

    Advice to Management

Cut some levels of senior management and empower the management to take decisions.

    Pros

Great peers. Folks are very smart and willing to share knowledge and work together to resolve technical issues. Everyone is interested in resolving issues and creating a product to be proud of. Vacation accrual rates are better than typical. Potential for up to 20% bonus each year. Medical benefits are top notch. 401(k) is generous with employer match. Opportunities to work on-site (various international locations) with state-of-the-art complex power control systems can be a great career benefit to young engineers interested in this growing field. Internal transfers to international locations are possible and encouraged. On-site commissioning of systems is expected and can be interesting.

    Cons

Salary is about 10% below rate, and bonuses are difficult to get to make up the 10%. Extraordinary effort is required and burnout is an issue. Vacation time is difficult to schedule and travel to site is required of all engineering talent. Site travel can extend multiple weeks without breaks. Management exerts extreme pressure to stay on site (international travel) and will not offer additional compensation. Opportunities for promotion vary greatly between sites. Be sure to ask about specific options when inquiring about open positions.

    Advice to Management

You have an extremely well-educated and self-motivated collection of engineers and technical support staff. Give them the flexibility to honor their personal/family commitments while providing you the best of their talent and you will gain the benefit of an engaged, satisfied, dedicated and efficient team who will give you the products and solutions necessary to effectively compete in Grid market as it opens up in the US (and North America). Don't try to make your individual engineers fit into a replaceable-cog-in-the-machine role. They each have strengths and weaknesses, needs and desires, and by recognizing the whole as a sum bigger than the parts, you can allow them to fill-in for each other were needed, and naturally encourage the breadth and depth of everyone's understanding to improve performance and competency of the team. These are "thinkers" as well as "doers", and each needs time and space to invent and discover solutions to problems as they are encountered and resolved. Allow that to happen.

    Pros

Steady job.. and you can keep fairly regular hours.

    Cons

Hostile work environment. Management micro manages and focuses on "relationships over results". Basically this means that if you do a good work but someone who has a better 'relationship' with your boss says you don't, you're in for an uphill battle. I personally found ALSTOM in Bellevue to e one of those most hostile work environments I had ever been in. People don't even say good morning to you in the halls or make eye contact with you.

    Advice to Management

My advice is to GM - after you finish your acquisition of the US division, fire the entire staff of the power management systems division. They are INCOMPATIBLE with GM's management style and expectations.

    Pros

Good company culture. Flexibility options for hours. Open communication between teams. Possibility for advancement seems attainable when you are a driven employee.

    Cons

Project work can be placed on very tight timelines in order to satisfy customer. This can lead it to be difficult to manage a reasonable work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Teams seem to work better when given flexibility. Making yourselves available and approachable is crucial in this type of work environment.

    Pros

Great Benefits, people possess excellent technical skills. Good support on work visas and immigration. Good opportunity to travel for work. Excellent work life balance.

    Cons

Salary is on the lower side considering the market around you. Mentorship can be lacking at times. Career progression can be murky if you are not vocal about moving up.

    Advice to Management

Offer competitive salaries considering the high cost of living in the area. Consider implementing some leadership and rotational programs for interested employees.

    Pros

Benefits, Salary, Offices, Really smart People

    Cons

A few manager focused too much on the short term. Cyclical business (and layoffs). Slow to adapt to new technologies though when I left it was already improving. Some manager manage by bullying employees, regardless of their actual performance. Too focused on "performance reviews" and not actual job done.
