I worked at ALSTOM as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

The job itself was great. The freedom with flex time.

    Cons

Management. You are to be seen and not heard. Non-professional environment. Expected to work unorthodox hours (60 hours+), and then management harasses the employees for over time. If you are a temporary employee the likelihood of being brought on as a full-time employee isn't even considered, you are fed broken promises to appease you for the time being a year and a half later of perfect performance and you still aren't brought on as a full-time employee. Forced into awkward non-professional social situations; such as going to the bar with your general manager. Inappropriate comments from management towards women employees. Inexperienced individuals in the lead rules in the company.

The Charleroi location has absolutely disgusting behavior from management. Usually a hostile environment, and don't dare contact Human Resources for fear of retaliation.

    Extremely high turn over rate.

I have been working at ALSTOM as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great bunch of coworkers. Great cafeteria. Nice location - very close to 405.

    Cons

Some projects may be long lead service type contracts - release cycles are long drawn - so they may not ship your code for a few months.

Interesting Projects, but the local branch is poorly managed with little incentive to continue working there.

    Pros

International company: work with colleagues from different countries
    Good health benefits and 401k
    Some interesting projects

    Cons

Large turnover, many poor department managers, very little incentive to continue working, career paths are not defined or implemented, over 95% of employees have held the same job for the last 5 years.

Loved the work, but management, policies, & HR are dysfunctional and outdated.

I worked at ALSTOM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has some amazing product that really make an impact on the world.

    Cons

Alstom's managers are disconnected from those they manage. Management consists of a high percentage of PhDs who don't understand that some of their less educated workers may know more than they do in their given area. Just leave the human out of human resources (HR), and policies fluctuate with the whims of HR & management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs advocate for their workers, learn that chauvinistic behavior is outdated and prosecutable, value the tools workers bring to the table, and grow a spine when it comes to dealing with policy. HR needs to quantify experience, not just degrees. Policies need to stand firm, or be re-written to reflect acceptable practices.

I have been working at ALSTOM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great pay, benefits, work environment and very interesting and clean work.
For Chattanooga this place is really hard to beat. Facility is very impressive and well maintained.

    Cons

Products not competative enough to beat competition and stay in business in global marketplace.
60% of workforce eliminated due to lack of work.
Getting laid off due to closing of turbine rotor manufacturing line.
As conditions change company may rehire many of us.

I have been working at ALSTOM

    Pros

The company overall is great. It offers great benefits as far as insurance. The pay scale is great also. New facility with state of the art equipment to work with.

    Cons

There are no real cons that I found while working with Alstom. I just got out my comfort zone of the maintenance field and was grouped with coworkers that I was uncomfortable with.

    Pros

    - Good salary.
    - Stable job.
    - People are friendly.

    Cons

    - Legacy code. A lot of it. Not a problem, since every company has those. But they have to get modern.
    - Bureaucracy can try to micro-manage work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Try to move to open source, and other new tools.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at ALSTOM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

No micromanagement. Great work/life balance. Self-directed work, self-monitored time away, small office, good communication with immediate colleagues......

    Cons

Short-sighted leadership in US offices, friction between French/American ways of doing business, lack of customer service attitude resulting in loss of US business/clients, inappropriate displays of anger toward support staff/ customer directors/upper management by US leadership, lack of vision in restructuring efforts. Lack of support from IT and Paris leadership in general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-examination of US Transportation division structure/staff, development of name recognition in US, sense of urgency re: political/sociological appetite for modern public transport and investment in the creation of manufacturing jobs. Increased understanding of development of client relationships in the US.
