    Pros

People are great there. Was a very fun and fulfilling experience. The company as a whole held a high standard in its compliance and safety.

    Cons

Upper management protected itself and would cut people that was not in their inner circle.

    Advice to Management

Understand that there are good people that work there. Choosing people that kiss up over good hard working people is not the right formula for long term success.

    Pros

    Great staff. Pay above average.

    Cons

    Upper management is really awful.

    Advice to Management

Quit saving each other's jobs and making it harder for your employees. More staff, less upper management, better results.

    Pros

Great place to work in 80s and 90s. Loved co-workers and management like family.

    Cons

Became more difficult due to economic pressures in early 2000s. Johnson and Johnson bought out ALZA in 2002.

    Advice to Management

Management was very good to us. They gave us warning, and people were able to start other companies or careers. R&D was closed in 2009 but commercial plant in Vacaville, CA still producing for JNJ

Used to be a fantastic place to work pre Johnson & Johnson

    Pros

After J & J buyout: Salary was good Easy commute Great analysts to work with in lab

    Cons

After J & J buyout: Very low moral-Undervalued their employees Poor Management Not truthful about future (layoffs) Reduced benefits and perks Corp. profit ruled everything

    Advice to Management

Promote employees who are good at what they do and not just "yes" people. Supervisors should have very good people skills along with the technical skills. Happy employees are productive employees

    Pros

The quality of people that work there is excellent. Everyone is friendly and generally helpful.

    Cons

Management in general is sub-par, particularly upper management. For the most part, the management is ladder climbers and will do anything to keep their spot or move up.

    Advice to Management

Start focusing on you direct reports. Many are very good employees, but a lot of them has lost most of their morale.

Big change in culture after J&J purchase of Alza.

    Pros

The pre-J&J days were more financially rewarding to employees. The original Alza provided a very good total compensation package which included stock options to ALL employees and an excellent stock purchase plan, which really helped motivate employees. J&J only provides the really good compensation perks to top management.

    Cons

J&J did provide some good management technologies such as Process Excellence. However, I feel that a review of management outcomes over the time since J&J bought Alza would show that a "east coast (think big old school manufacturing)" vs "west coast (think innovation and high tech)" culture clash was a major motivator in the departure of most of the highly experienced Alza "long-timers", you can only do so much with a steady stream of new inexperienced people. The previous reviewers comment on the two-year rotation of senior managers from the east coast also hit the target spot on.

    Advice to Management

Next time J&J buys a high tech company make a better effort to retain the people and benefits that will keep the innovation going instead of staffing top management via two-year stints from the company headquarters in NJ and zeroxing the J&J corporate compensation plan.
