    Great people, bad management

    Senior CHEMIST (Current Employee)

ProsPeople are great there. Was a very fun and fulfilling experience. The company as a whole held a high standard in its compliance and safety.

ConsUpper management protected itself and would cut people that was not in their inner circle.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that there are good people that work there. Choosing people that kiss up over good hard working people is not the right formula for long term success.

    Good money, good experience

Engineering Co-Op (Current Employee) Vacaville, CA

ProsI've had a great experience working at Alza. They've changed their co-op program since some of these reviews were written. My current supervisor meets with me often to make sure I've got a handle on things. A lot of the engineers here are very talented, and the money is quite good for a student. They even let me work part-time when classes started again.

ConsIt takes too long to get anything done because of paperwork and bureaucracy. I don't know if that's the nature of pharmaceutical manufacturing, or specific to this company. It can be very frustrating to be dealing with the same problems for six months.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great co-worker, horrible upper management

Associate Scientist (Former Employee) Vacaville, CA

    ProsGreat staff. Pay above average.

    ConsUpper management is really awful.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit saving each other's jobs and making it harder for your employees. More staff, less upper management, better results.

    Great company, great times

Senior Chemical Engineer (Former Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsGreat place to work in 80s and 90s. Loved co-workers and management like family.

ConsBecame more difficult due to economic pressures in early 2000s. Johnson and Johnson bought out ALZA in 2002.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement was very good to us. They gave us warning, and people were able to start other companies or careers. R&D was closed in 2009 but commercial plant in Vacaville, CA still producing for JNJ

    Run Away

Manufacturing Engineer Co-Op (Former Employee) Vacaville, CA

Pros-getting six sigma training and experience for the resume as a college student was good

Cons-big company with lots of red tape and bureaucratic, that is stick in their old ways. As a young college student go-getter this was extremely hard to deal with, but a good lesson to learn.
-Boss was never around for a weekly one-on-one meeting
-they were trying to do WAY too many projects with no resources or buy-in from upper management.
-They tried to do data-driven decisions, but in reality the data was awful or people bent it.

Advice to Senior Management-hire better people
-give all the support and resources to people in order to actually finish a project and do it well.
-work on one project at a time

Used to be a fantastic place to work pre Johnson & Johnson

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Vacaville, CA

    ProsAfter J & J buyout:
    Salary was good
    Easy commute
Great analysts to work with in lab

    ConsAfter J & J buyout:
    Very low moral-Undervalued their employees
    Poor Management
    Not truthful about future (layoffs)
    Reduced benefits and perks
    Corp. profit ruled everything

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote employees who are good at what they do and not just "yes" people.
Supervisors should have very good people skills along with the technical skills.
    Happy employees are productive employees

    Great employees, bad upper management

Senior Associate Scientist (Former Employee) Vacaville, CA

ProsThe quality of people that work there is excellent. Everyone is friendly and generally helpful.

ConsManagement in general is sub-par, particularly upper management. For the most part, the management is ladder climbers and will do anything to keep their spot or move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart focusing on you direct reports. Many are very good employees, but a lot of them has lost most of their morale.
