I worked at AMD as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

This is a reflection of my internship at AMD. I found the workplace environment and facilities pretty nice compared to my other jobs. The salary is also very competitive. I had quite a bit of flexibility and independence with my work. The workload usually comes in waves depending on the product cycle. I never found myself overwhelmed, but I know a few people that had to pull several all-nighters. My team was great, but I also heard some horror stories.

    Cons

The usual bureaucracy of large companies

I worked at AMD as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

The Markham office hires a lot of interns which is good for university students with little work experience. My team in particular was one of the better teams within the company and they provided quite a bit of training.

    Cons

Their market share in the graphics card business is slipping. The company has continuously downsized, selling building after building in their Markham location. As an intern, it didn't take too long for me to realize that this company has no future. They don't retain that many interns to begin with.
Company culture is pretty much non-existent, the people are not very friendly there.

I have been working at AMD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is still backing up with many talented people. There is no barrier to talk with different functional teams for different hierarchy levels.

    Cons

Virtually no technical marketing people to do researches for the next killer products; Coin operated upper management minds; Continue cutting employee's benefits (vacations, health, life, etc)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the "sun-shine" message and face the reality; Need more engineering effort to define value proposition of the company

I worked at AMD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

People are laid back. Not exactly sure if this is a pro.

    Cons

Like many big shrieking companies, this company also has its own issues. Working in Markham office is a nightmare. Most management is in Texas and they don't care cutting people off in remote offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop laying off employees. If you are not sure you cannot disrupt a market, then get rid of the management. There are too many VPs, Sr. Directors and Managers. The only people doing the work seems to be the co-op (intern) students. Get rid of those VPs and Sr. Directors who are running a declining business.

    Pros

    Good Pay
    Free Gym & Showers
    Generally nice people

    Cons

    Work level is high
Upper Management are over confident but don't know what they're doing
Low morale due to uncertainty over the future and regular layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to go into some market where you won't be killed by the competition.

I worked at AMD as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Big company big name. Hire many students, so not too difficult to get in. Roles vary a lot so make sure ask questions about the roles during interview. Potential to learn a lot if you get in a good team with good manager

    Cons

Could be stuck in a pos doing mindless auto testings (WHCK!) which you will get bored after 1 week, with 68 more weeks to go...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Considering how many students they hire, it'll be great to have the option for students to rotate teams once during the 16 months work term. After all if they want to attract new talents thru the students, first make the students happy n give them more exposure.
