I worked at AMEC Foster Wheeler

    Pros

Provides fair amount of training and tools to help with career development and advancement. Competitive salaries and benefits. Experienced, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Good work environment.

    Cons

Cost structure has gotten out of hand and business development efforts are not very productive, which has resulted in a shortage of projects and significant shrinkage of the local workforce. Local management has not made the best decisions when staffing senior level positions. Burdened by costly and unproductive bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at costs and eliminate bureaucracy. Fix problems in local business development efforts.

I have been working at AMEC Foster Wheeler full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay with ok benefits, flexible work schedule, great coworkers that are always there for you, challenging and complex projects with the opportunity to work outside of the US.

    Cons

You are only a number, only about profits, no mentoring or training programs, cliques prevent employees from getting resources (it's not what you know, it's who you know) global company message not consistent with local management, no recognition for hard work/employees overworked, resistant to change WRT sustainability and efficiency measures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are so many studies that say if your employees are happy and feel appreciated, they'll work harder and advocate for the company. You should try it sometime.

    Pros

Global company provides some good/exotic opportunities to work within the company.
    Fairly healthy work environment

    Cons

Global company means you spend a great deal of effort on corporate bureaucracy instead of science/trade
Constant drive for utilization and layoffs when not met
The company culture suffers when the company mission is acquisitions, acquisitions, acquisitions.

I have been working at AMEC Foster Wheeler full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Been based in London as well as in Houston, and some great people to work with. Good remuneration. Diversity of projects, as AMEC operates in many different industries. Laudable company values. Open communication.

    Cons

The different operating units tend to run their own businesses, and engineering functional support could be better weak. This means that core business processes can be different depending on where you are. Not so much of an issue if you are you are working on projects in one location, but frustrating of you are moving around. No career development (so far).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forge ahead with The AMEC Way, and align core business processes like running projects and business development, across operating units. Do not limit career development to junior staff - do not forget senior staff!
