I worked at AMEC NSS full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good work environment. Supportive of training and development. Great pay.

    Cons

Shifting projects and emphasized moving to client site (3 hours north of Toronto). My role was too heavily focused on project management, whereas I was looking for more technical engineering work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more incentives for moving for work to site.

I worked at AMEC NSS full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Excellent compensation and benefits.
    Opportunities for technically challenging work.
Generally positive culture with overall good mix of people with whom to interact.
Younger employees can be quite good and great to work with.

    Cons

Relatively limited avenues to grow skills and exposure to larger industry. It is a fairly hierarchical consulting firm that would benefit from more dynamism and business development. This would give people a greater sense of opportunities.
    Training is generally not available.

I have been working at AMEC NSS full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Above average pay and good benefits
    - DB Pension Plan
    - 35 Hours Work Week with fair overtime policies

    Cons

    - Poor training (almost none)
    - Client base is very narrow
    - Work load can be very unbalanced among different groups in the company and time of year. Management have a hard time controlling this.
    - DB Pension Plan is underfunded
    - Not much culture to speak of (i.e. people just come to work)

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at AMEC NSS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Money (excellent starting package out of engineering)
    Excellent Benefits
    Work Life Balance
    35 Hour work week
New office in 393 University Avenue and Downtown location
Good place to develop basic consulting and project management skills

    Cons

    -Frugal
-Senior Management are blind - all they can see are Ontario's 2 large nuclear operators. They cannot focus on other growth areas of the company.
-No value for people with business skills and acumen. They leave engineers and scientists to do business and strategies, so a major issue in the long run.
-Work is too technical. No high level impact.
    - Not integrated with other parts of AMEC. No easy flow of resources between different divisions. Also projects do not flow easily through different divisions of AMEC.
    - UNION. People like doing manual work, which can be easily done through software but the union prevents changes.
    - No value for talented people. No formal bonus structure. Very hard to break into mid-management unless you commit to remote location or get friendly with VPs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire Jim Rippon. You need a CEO not a COO. He is not a strategist, he only thinks about day to day operations. Also he focuses on the wrong things for cost cutting. Instead of creating more efficient employees, he focuses on taking up free coffees and christmas cards.
