Pros
In my position, I rarely have to deal with customers. 20% discount on rooms and trucks. There is flexibility in the schedule.
Cons
The pay is very low, little room for advancement. When things are going well, you will have get more hours than you want, but when business is down, you will be lucky to get 2-3 hours a week!
Advice to Senior Management
Do unto others as you would have done to you.
Pros
flexible schedule
potential for bonus compensation
Cons
poor leadership in management
you will work more than the manager and train yourself
Advice to Senior Management
When hiring a manger, periodically follow up with employees to see how they are doing.
Pros
GM and Verizon discounts. Good people, and depending on the location, you can help alot of people get along in life. Rough times we live in, perfect place to put a smile on a stranger's face.
Cons
Depending on the region, the upper echelon of management is typically idiots. Most of them lack the proper education to run a region of centers.
Advice to Senior Management
Get an education of some sorts, then try to run a business. How can so much be run by somebody who probably could run an ice cream truck. Sad. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
Pros
Depending on which department you work for, you will have some of the best bosses you could ever have. They are passionate and knowledgeable, and they are focused on making Amerco better while at the same time providing you with the best opportunity for growth. The length of service can be both good and bad - this company has folks that have been with the company for 20-30 years or more. The good: strong industry knowledge and passion for the company. The downside: Outside ideas may not come by as often.
Cons
The gas price spike and the housing market crisis are impacting the moving industry, so compensation and hiring may not be as competitive compared to some other industries. Advice to Senior Management
Continue to build loyalty from your folks. Increase communication down to the lowest level folks so everybody could continue to be at the same page.
Pros
%20 off U-haul equipment rentals.
Cons
Depends what department you work at. So called careers don't last loner than a year. Most employees move on to better opportunities.
Advice to Senior Management
If you want employees to stick around longer that a year might want to pay better salaries.
Pros
As an intern, they have you working on real projects, but the supervisors are careful not to overload you with too much work. They do a great job of knowing your capabilities. They also teach you a great deal. The company has a really culture built around their brand, and the founder's family still plays a vital role through out the company. It's also not a "grimy" place to work.
Cons
There are definitely a lot of seasoned vets in upper management that will probably never quit. At the same time, the middle management is huge, so it's not like they won't ever promote you.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue running a great intern program! The only thing I could ask for more is just to make clear what opportunities for advancement there are.
