Pros – Working outside and meeting new people
Cons – year long work and you work in any condition
Advice to Senior Management – Some were good some were bad
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
Pros – the people that work there, well the drivers that is.
Cons – I dont know where to start...
-pay is terrible, dont expect to ever get past 12 dollars an hour...it takes 6 years to get to 12 dollars an hour...after that your stuck...and they also dont pay overtime
-bosses get mad if you take a lunch, even though they take thirty minutes of pay from your check
-hours suck, they screw with you. you start at 630 am. when you are on a clothing run(the house to house ordeal) you have to map it yourself, sometimes starting at 7 am, that could easily take 30-40 minutes. it could be 160 stops and spread between a few towns which are over an hour away, or maybe even 40 stops and spread out between 40 towns that aren't near each other. then when, or if, you get done you have to unload it at one of the 15 stores they have...if you are on "extra work" they can and most likely will send you from the south side of chicago, to the north side of chicago at 2-3 o'clock...you won't clock out till 6-8pm+ that night
-the people at the stores don't speak any english, good luck deciphering them
-battling the elements. trucks have no heat and no air conditioning. in the winter you have to fend for yourself even if there is 5 feet of snow and its negative 30 outside, and in the summer you are outside running to all of these houses in 100 degree weather
-they lie to the "donor's". there have been many times that i have went to somebodies house and been asked "what do you guys do to this stuff"(they tell us to lie, but i don't) i say they sell it at stores. then the people get mad because they think this stuff is going to veterans(they tell them that on the phone)
-how easy it is to get fired. if i have a lunchbox that is to big in my truck, i can get a warning slip. if i have my cellphone out to check the time, i can get a warning slip. if i have handwarmers in the winter, i can get a warning slip. it goes on and on
Advice to Senior Management – listen to your employee's.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
Pros – Amvets was an outstanding place to work. They offered a competitive base salary along with tips. Management also very helpful.
Cons – The job got a little repetitive at times. Not much room for advancement due to the nature of the job.
