I have been working at AOC (Architect of the Capitol) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A good agency to learn how Congress and your government works. Flexible schedules with telework and alternate work schedules

    Cons

Promotions are difficult to get unless your relative works there. Highly political environment but I guess its to be expected working for Congress.Office space is a nightmare. Huge bureaucracy where everything gets done a t a snails pace. The agency values processes over talent and promotes people who are unable to make logical decisions.

I have been working at AOC (Architect of the Capitol) full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

If you love people, want to make a difference in sharing the US Capitol knowledge with worldwide visitors,,thick soled shoes for standing, and have thick skin to take the lukewarm evaluations then please apply. Favoritism aboiunds so hopefully you will be one of those who are favored. Benefits are good, pay is listed as GS but lower than the real GS scale, great support from colleagues who try to keep you positively focused until your next job.

    Cons

Micromanaged by incompetent mangement leaders that seem to destroy confidences rather than build unity and professionalism, often 5-7 hours on your feet and very high turnover..People leave by merely quitting, forced resigning/retiring, marrying/relocating or dying from the stresses. Mangement works through fear and intimidation and gets away with it. They recently hired and barely trained 40 people then let go 3/4 of them, only to have a new ad placed to hire and train more employees to maintain their own job descriptions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign and let those who really are qualified and professional who enjoy sharing the wonderfulness of the US Capitol with the public stay on. Obviously, the paycheck is all you want, not the people you who work for you or the people you serve. Classes and schooling won't help if your heart is not right or your mind open to any suggestions. Any negative feedback should not get a person fired or written up. Soliciting employees to spy on others for favors is wrong!

I worked at AOC (Architect of the Capitol) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

unique job experience: I had a ring side seat to history for several years and I learned a lot about the inner workings of congress.

    Cons

The staffers that I dealt with were drunk with power and knew very little about what was in their portfolio. Having to teach kids about work and life without offending them was always a challenge.

I have been working at AOC (Architect of the Capitol) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Important heritage asset of incredible importance. The history of the location, architecture, art and what goes on here is incredibly relevant to almost everyone.
Watching the day-to-day progress of Congress is fascinating.
Some incredibly intelligent and friendly co-workers.

    Cons

Management has failed to create a professional environment in which to work. Not at all a trusting environment.
Entry level jobs with little chance to move on to more professional positions or assume more responsibilities.
Supervisory staff is spread so thin as to be ineffective in managing the quality of work performed. Seems that the measure of success is the number of visitors shoved through the building regardless of their experience while there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Supervisory structure is too flat. Responsibilities need to be shared among people doing the work not just arbitrarily enforced by supervisors who have no experience in the field. Create teams to handle specific operational roles and emphasize mentoring of newer employees by more experienced employees in those roles. Give the team leads the responsibility of ensuring that quality work is being performed.

    Pros

Leadership is strong. Great communicators. Problems are solved from the bottom up. great benefits.

    Cons

Sporadic Congressional oversight forces senior leadership to make poor and suboptimal choices. Opportunities fro advancement are limited. most people just take a job and stay in it for 15 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
