Pros
Good benefit and work environment
Cons
UARC and no commercial projects
Pros
Great people to work with
Cons
Limited long term vision and inability to manager downturns
Advice to Senior Management
Prepare for the down cycles as well as the growth years
Pros
Balanced worklife. Good work timing culture. 5 day working.
Cons
Too slow to take decisions. Takes employees for granted at times. No career path for employees for many years of service. Poor pay master as compared to others in the market.
Advice to Senior Management
More feedbac required from employees and customers Be receptive to change in the customer and employee market
Pros
APL provided a great learning environment with a tremendous amount of diversity. Good people that worked hard together as a team. At the worker level, everyone pulled together to a common goal and overcame some of the cultural obstacles.
Cons
The Singaporean (NOL Group etc.) influence is a bit much. The APL and NOL cultures never really came together after the NOL acquisition. This created a certain obvious ongoing tension in the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to staff that is located outside of Singapore. International operations provide a good vehicle to leverage diversity - take advantage of the worldwide talent that exisits in the organization!!
Pros
It still have some decent benefit. I am sure this will change now they have relocated to Phoenix.
Cons
This was a very good company to work for. Excellent pay, benefits, and training oppotunites. But this is no longer the case since NOL bought APL..
All good opportunities, projects, training, and promotion happens only in Singapore, not in US. US employees' key roll is to keep day to day business running. We rarely have any more opportunity to participate in any new initiatives which only take place in Singapore.
We also see gradual erosion of benefit.
Advice to Senior Management
Opportunities should be opened to all employees not just for Singaporeans.
Pros
great pay and some good people trying to do the best with what they have
Cons
i.) Owned by the Singapore Government
ii.) Very political environment
iii.) Jobs going out of the US
iv.) just good enough to get the job done
Advice to Senior Management
APL ships goods and products into the US. Their customers sell directly to US consumers or to US companies that sell to US consumers. By depleting the US work force you are cutting off the hand that feeds you. Henry Ford's model was to employ his customers and they will have pride in their product and buy the product. It is a self-perpetuating model where the company, the employees, and the country all benefit from goods, services, and stimulating the economy. The less jobs there are in the US, the less goods that the US will consume and the less will need to be shipped into the US.
Pros
Without a doubt, the family atmosphere and caring coworkers is the best reason to work at APL. Many people have worked there decades, literally, and their dedication inspires you to work harder.
Cons
The pyramid narrows steeply at the top, and the company is not diverse enough in its senior management. More women and minorities (in the US) need to be recruited and retained.
Advice to Senior Management
Find ways to motivate employees over the long-term in a sustainable manner. Smooth out the cyclical nature of the business by cutting costs even during years of massive profits.
Pros
Good compensation, reasonable expectations, good treatment towards employees
Cons
Not a dynamic place, low investment in technologies
Advice to Senior Management
None, really. Keep up the good treatment of employees
