Pros
Generally you only work full time 4 months out of the year with with some time during the other 8 months. Some of the managers care but many are just there to collect a paycheck. Great for students needing to pay for school.
Cons
The pay was good but each year they continue to figure out ways to cut pay across many positions. There is an attitude of if you don't like something then leave. Most employees that have been there for awhile are only concerned about their own hides and saving their own positions. Do not think you will advance there because most people have been there since it started and have no other skills so they aren't leaving.
Advice to Senior Management
When you say "if you don't like it here then leave" because you know the economy is bad then something is wrong. Keep people because they are talented and not because they kiss your a** and have been there for years. You might be pleasing your investors but stabbing your own employees in the back will lead to your demise.
Pros
Free lunch
Safety isn't too much of an issue
Cons
This company has all it's priorities screwed up, all they are interested in is showing off to to other alarm companies in the areas. They built a beautiful super expensive building with free lunch for it's employees but LAID off a bunch of people to pay for it and lowered it's sales rep's pay scales...really????
Highly nepotistic when it comes to mobility. Very few openings are filled internally. Managers are under qualified and mean to their employees--probably due to lack of training.
Very low wages compared to other employers in the area--even for Utah, APX can hardly retain entry level employees because of this.
Benefits are mediocre, at best.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop showing off and get your priorities straight.
Pros
For the reps that are successful you can be compensated very well if you are patient to see you money after the summer. You get to travel and live in different places for four months that you wouldn't normally get the opportunity to do so.
Cons
Commission structure is deceiving. It's easy to "give away" your commissions to customers to close a deal. Not a lot of organization in most offices and there isn't much personalized help. They basically take anyone who is breathing to their summer offices and hope that some people figure it out on their own and stick around.
Advice to Senior Management
Create a real hiring process. Hire only qualified employees, set quotas, and have a base plus commission compensation package.
Pros
Great pay. Work with a lot of great people. Allows those with little work experience to prove themselves in the work place.
Cons
Normally will be necessary to relocate for the four to five month period. Long days. Long weeks. Can become redundant.
Advice to Senior Management
I think you are doing a fa-nominal job. This will be my fifth year with APX and have been very grateful for this opportunity.
Pros
Great Money. You can learn some great sales and people skills. APX good stable company, especially in the 'summer sales industry'. Uncapped earning potential,
Cons
Knocking doors all summer is not fun. Very monotonous workload. APX will nickel and dime you every way they can to avoid paying out full. APX can get political. Even if you are a stud salesmen, you will get taken advantage of if you don't have someone up high battling for you.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the politics, transform into a true meritocratic company. Give more power to the managers and less to the regionals. Be more frugal at corporate so you don't have to lower pay scales to cover your margins.
Pros
good compensation
housing provided
pod casts
Cons
no 'special deals'
Contract issues and point bank issues still being resolved,
cleaning fee assigned even though my apt was spotless at the end of year
no sign on bonus? what the heck
Advice to Senior Management
let sales reps that cant work over the summer work out special payscales/deals with you so they can sell during school
Pros
Great money, lots of freedom in the off-season, and very satisfying to see others make good money
Cons
Difficult moving around every summer, and knocking doors is knocking doors.
Advice to Senior Management
Great leadership.
Pros
APX has been a good job while going through school. They have been very flexible in giving time off and working with my school schedule. Management has been good and seem to be concerned about my needs. I have also made many friends while I have worked there. It is a good place to meet other students.
Cons
One of the downsides to APX is that they are sales oriented company. This can be good and bad. Their employment is good because they have a strong sales force. The downside is that it is more difficult to get recognized if you are not in sales.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should try to do a better job of compensating all employees more evenly.
Pros
Good pay, only working summers, it's great for students.
Cons
It is hard work and outside, a lot of places are really hot.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't make it completely commission.
