OK with prior management, not so good with current lack of management

I worked at ARC Machines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Life was good until sales went into the toilet and a new CEO was brought in.

    Cons

Since the company is over-leveraged, they are constantly in a battle to attempt profitability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Without experienced technical leadership, your future is hopeless.

    Pros

non anymore, at one point it was great place to work, but that is long gone.

    Cons

Quality control is a big problem. There are no internal controls. There are no knowledgeable welders left. All management is new to the industry. The process of learning the industry is making the company go under. After so many years of being in business it just took one inexperienced venture capitalist to run it down. It's best to stay away now. As you can see by the other reviews this is nothing new.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I can't recommend anything to management because they don't listen anyway.

Company in desperate need of strong leadership

    Pros

weekly pay check; diverse employees in work place

    Cons

Company being taken in wrong direction; sales have been consistently decreasing and losing distributors and customers; terminating employees on made up / phony reasons and either hiring "friends" or hiring with much lower paid replacements. Company is continually sued by ex-employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take company in the right direction and try to save the jobs of the employees that are still there. Need new, improved leadership.

New management will destroy the company

I worked at ARC Machines full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

None now. It used to be a family oriented company with the good industry reputation where employees enjoy working. Everything has changed when a newly hired CEO took over in 2013 and focused only on short term profit for himself and investors.

    Cons

Everything now including pricing which have double and tripled in less than a year. New CEO thinks that customers are nothing more than the dollar sign. He has some good business ideas, but his decisions are all based on financial factors.

The company has been steadily laying off employees for last two years and only has a half of what it used be. Employees have low morale and motivation due to the management change, series of lay offs and recent compensation and benefits cut.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The investors/owners need to realize what is really happening to the company before it is foo late.

    Pros

This review will seem like a extremely biased review from a disgruntled former employee. This is not; this is a very objective review based on personal observations.

    - Location: very convenient if you live in the San Fernando Valley/Burbank/Glendale area
    - Diverse business units: Accounting, Finance, Engineering, Production, Sales

    Cons

    - Limited Career advancement. Often promises that opportunities will be available but will eventually be taken by a direct outside hire or nothing will materialize at all.
    - Strict quotas
    - Sales Orders are often placed onto respective employees to complete without any prior notice
    - Production Employees are often asked to work on holidays, days off. There are even instances where approved PTO (Paid Time Off) have been canceled.
    - start of work/breaks/lunch periods/end of work are governed by a siren. This gave it a schoolyard feel - for working adults.
    -

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The only two pieces of advice I can give is to revert to a traditional 5 day, 8 hour work week. Since many of the employees will often work on fridays, it makes no sense to heap extra work hours onto them even if they benefit from OT.

The other piece of advice is, to rid of the siren that announces start of work/breaks/lunch/end of work. This is not a school, please trust that your employees will know what time they need to start work, begin and end their break/lunch, etc.

    Pros

If you like welding this is a place where you can learn a thing or two about orbital welding.
Nice building on a private hill (in Pacoima though).

    Cons

    - The company is struggling due to long lasting product sales downturn due to lack of Sales Management.
    - The Executive Board don't have a clue about the industry and the nature of this business and makes fast and risky decisions.
    - Lack of understanding of basic sales and marketing principles and lack of strong end effecting programs in place.
    - Significant layoffs over the past 4 months including long-tenured employees with tribal knowledge = lack of loyalty toward employees. At the same time promotions to those who're willing to brown nose.
    - Running the company reactively instead of proactively.
    - Low morale, no advancement opportunities although there are lots of promises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The solution is not to lay off people when product sales downturn occurs but to have the right people as leaders to begin with. Have a real HR department who knows how to find strong, charismatic and knowledgeable talent. Have a real IT department who actually knows how to setup computers/printers.

Arc Machines was a good place to work.

    I worked at ARC Machines

    Pros

My bosses were good people. They took the time to teach me quite a bit.

    Cons

Nothing saves you from layoffs. Seniority is not recognized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have consideration for seniority. Have respect for employees personal lives. Instead of laying off someone that has been loyal to AMI for many years, offer a pay reduction or a lower paying position but don't just toss them away.

I worked at ARC Machines full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The lack of control from the management, the salary (when payed on time). Comedians' attitude of the managers (completely ignorant and arrogant).

    Cons

No planning, no procedures, no support (chaos); no team, just lies and promises from the management. No respect for written agreements. Very bad financial situation of the company that will lead to other employees fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know that it's matter of time: trying to reorganize the company and reach high earnings for the private equity fund that owns AMI, then sell the company to another welding manufacturer or equity fund.
Remember also to work in a professional and organized way or everyone will discover all the lies and hidden plans you have. It's a matter of considering the intelligence and motivation of your collaborators.
