Not always happy to help

ASDA Colleague (Current Employee)

I have been working at ASDA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIn the economic climate as it is today its still holding its place as a stable job.

ConsThe people at the top are always looking at how to cut costs which most times means how to do the same work with the least people. No one now who starts is offered a full time contract.

Advice to Senior ManagementYes its important to get customers through the tills but there is constant pressure on those who have to jump on the tills instead of filling shelves. We cant what we are paid to do. We need more checkout operators or more self scan tills.

I have been working at ASDA part-time for more than a year

ProsOnce you relax and get into it, it is a nice company to be a part of.
They value honesty and are very understanding people when they need to be.
You find the most humble people in this company.
No extra hassle involved that you don't need in your life.

ConsAs with any job, you get good days and bad days.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone.

Lovely colleagues but overall, a mediocre company to work for.

Services (Current Employee)
Stevenage, England (UK)

I have been working at ASDA part-time for less than a year

ProsColleagues (minus Section Leaders and Managers) are wonderful people to work with. Break system works very well.

ConsSection Leaders and Management can be over zealous with their positions and a power trip is highly possible with some.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce Section Leader numbers to "TWO" per department, having four or five is too many and often leads to conflicts in the workplace. Also, bring in some form of incentive (like a raise in pay) if a colleague becomes multi-skilled across their department.

A great start to my career

Department Manager (Former Employee)
Slough, Berkshire, South East England, England (UK)

I worked at ASDA full-time for more than 3 years

Pros1) very good development and training for aspiring managers. 2) strong values meaning you get to work with some great people in a friendly and supportive environment. 3) a great sense of accomplishment at the end of each day especially after those long and hard ones. 4) there's no better place to work over Xmas with the vibe and pressures.

Cons1) some dictatorship styled managers around as well as incapable managers. 2) low pay when training and first sign off which makes you jealous of the overpaid externals. 3) lots of politics which is probably true for all large businesses. 4) can be very long days even if your dept is strong you have to wait for the others until you can go home.

Advice to Senior Management1) avoid dictatorship and micro management, give the dept manager real responsibilities and only hold accountable when these are not achieved - not when your in a bad mood. 2) take people surveys more seriously as there are some very poor store and trading managers out there who need their behaviours reviewed.

Not a bad place to work

Key Colleague (Current Employee)

I have been working at ASDA full-time for more than a year

ProsGood pay for a low skilled job, good job for students or older people, very flexible working hours, managers aren't very strict, management respect you.

ConsIt's hard to progress unless you are working on certain departments, the customers can be horrible especially in store in the middle of cities.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake career progression easier for employees, most departments don't have a section leader, instead someone has to do it for free.
