ASM International NV Reviews
Pros – Great benefits, HR never loses sight that employees are people, not just resources. Great people to work with, company is supportive of internal transfers with a wide range of positional responsibilities.
Cons – Typical large corporation confusion. Lack of clear company vision at worker level. Too much energy spent putting out fires versus proactively preventing them. Wheels of change can be very slow with regard to updating procedures, processes and methods. Company systems are comprehensive, but utterly un-intuitive with next to useless users manuals.
Advice to Senior Management – Communication. Dissemination of company vision to all levels of employees. Too many people have no idea what the mission statement of the company is, and how their respective position directly contributes to company success, and ultimately their own. Without this clarity I see way too many people who view their job as a paycheck, not as "Part of the Team" trying to "Win the Game".
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
Pros – You are usually given enough time to get tasks done, and given proper tools to get them done. Performance appraisals are fair unless you are grossly incompetent.
At times, the work itself can be interesting and challenging. You are given opportunities to become the key "go-to" person for key technologies.
Opportunities for travel exist. These trips provide good opportunities to visit and spend time in foreign lands.
As an employer, ASM is very fair to its employees. Many employees have left the company, only to return a few years later.
Cons – No job security to speak of. When manufacturers are investing in capital equipment, ASM hires like crazy. When equipment orders dry up, lots of folks get laid off..
From a software development point of view, there is very little opportunity for design and architecture. Most of the development is maintenance activities.
Advice to Senior Management – Find a way to mitigate the "boom or bust" employment staffing levels.
Be more proactive in developing new technology.

Pros – Good vacation, increased every 5 years. Good medical benefits. Little to no micro-management, you are left to get on with the job. Flexible working hours, can even work from home on computer-stuff. Good collaboration but only from like-minded individuals.
Cons – Clique-ish departmental rivalry. Favoritism is rife. Little to no company-wide team spirit. Upper management reactive, not pro-active. Manufacturing relocated to Singapore to reduce costs, but quality suffered so overall the decision was a bad one. Product development didn't listen to engineers much, but made the same changes if requested by customers. Travel policy a disaster for travellers. HR department is pitiful. Programs for employee development are announced but never implemented.
Advice to Senior Management – Employee satisfaction must become a core value at ASM, or the company will never become the big player it could be.

Pros – Company has leveraged a couple of good decisions in the past - buying small Finish ALD company. Now the clear industry leader in this key enabling technology.
Cons – Senior management is weak, and not well tuned into the needs of the company (for a medium size company). Surprisingly large culture gap between Dutch owners and American employee's.
Advice to Senior Management – Senior management can't be afraid of making key business decisions. Company needs to be better focused on what is best for the company, not just say yes to whatever customers ask for.
Pros – Quite work place with an average work load.
Cons – very old way of thinking. Seems the company is not growing for years. No communication between the employees.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
Pros – Easy going workplace
Friendly demeanor encouraged
Cons – Management seemed oblivions toward how project I worked on should proceed forward.
Advice to Senior Management – Need to leverage your talent in a better way. A large majority of employees are "twiddling their thumbs" while they wait for a real opportunity to come along.
Pros – Normal benefits better than the usual these days, international teamwork.
Cons – Rediculously long working hours 10~12 per day consistently, poorly designed business model, lack of support, no bandwidth to focus on quality, very ambiguous environment, thankless work.
Advice to Senior Management – Change management requires leaders, not engineers.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
Pros – Good company to break into the semi-conductor industry with. Lots of leading technology and innovation.
Very flexible work schedule. Managers try to make you happy.
Cons – Really can't think of any, sometimes it can be a bit slow but other than that it is a good place to work.
Pros – paycheck clears, benefits are payed.
Cons – there is no sense of camaraderie or brother hood , only back biting and throat cutting
Advice to Senior Management – the ones you trust are sticking it to you more than you will ever know
Pros – Many opportunity as more operations move here from US, Europe and Japan manufacturing site.
Cons – Few old timer there are making life difficult to those not in their camp
Advice to Senior Management – They should listen more to the voices of their associates.... the one really working to support the company.
