I worked at ASM International NV (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company structure main corporate offices in the Netherlands. ASM always offered the best pay and benefits I ever have received. The health insurance packages were excellent. Performance reviews were annual and on time. Work environment is excellent! Glass Blowers were allowed to flex their artistry somewhat in the fabrication of high performance quartz glass products.

    Cons

    ASM America Division Micromanagement Issues

    Negative Outlook

I worked at ASM International NV full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful, brilliant people work at ASMA!

    Cons

Strategic planning does not involve all employees. Constantly changing objectives which reflects the reactive not proactive culture of the company. No one can seem to make a decision in a timely manner.

    Advice to Management

Set clear objectives by identifying the 3 most important objectives of the company. Have everyone derive their objectives based upon this. Then drive the company through sound decision making to achieve excellence.

I worked at ASM International NV full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Everybody I worked with was easy to get along with. Ideas where taken seriously and input was always appreciated. The managers I worked for very fair and accommodating. Employees weren't expected to put in unnecessarily long hours just for the sake of warming a chair like some companies expect.

    Cons

Initial training upon joining the company was not very good. A lot of things seemed a little haphazard and ad hoc. Intranet system was a pain to use often.

    Advice to Management

Develop a better training system for new employees. Engineers were often sent to customer sites with very little training and seemed to be expected to pick things up while working on customer tools. A dedicated training tool in the demo lab would be extremely helpful if the space could be spared.

I have been working at ASM International NV full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent pay and can work a lot of OT and get a lot of International travel. Co-workers are awesome management is great in certain groups.

    Cons

Lots of time away from home if you are on Install Team. Management sometimes disconnected depending on the group you are in.

    Advice to Management

Take more time to care about employee's needs and suggestions.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at ASM International NV full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a US Veteran, ASM provides a great introduction to the semiconductor manufacturing industry and the major players within the business. With no prior experience within the installation of their products, the organization trusted my skillsets obtained within the military to complete numerous installation projects. Decent pay Great Health Benefits Flexible Schedule Talented People Lots of overtime

    Cons

The amount of travel associated with the position was not proportioned correctly amongst the installation engineers, which led to exhaustion and employee dissatisfaction. Smaller Company Not much space to move up Training needs work Excessive Travel for position

    Advice to Management

Senior Management was nowhere to be found and should play a more visible role to the junior employees. Mission was there, yet the vision was not. Employees felt out of the loop and unsure of their jobs. If ASM was not selling process tools, there was a sense of insecurity amongst all.

  8. Plenty of opportunity to move within company, Unusual level of employee loyalty

I have been working at ASM International NV full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, HR never loses sight that employees are people, not just resources. Great people to work with, company is supportive of internal transfers with a wide range of positional responsibilities.

    Cons

Typical large corporation confusion. Lack of clear company vision at worker level. Too much energy spent putting out fires versus proactively preventing them. Wheels of change can be very slow with regard to updating procedures, processes and methods. Company systems are comprehensive, but utterly un-intuitive with next to useless users manuals.

    Advice to Management

Communication. Dissemination of company vision to all levels of employees. Too many people have no idea what the mission statement of the company is, and how their respective position directly contributes to company success, and ultimately their own. Without this clarity I see way too many people who view their job as a paycheck, not as "Part of the Team" trying to "Win the Game".

  9. Good place to work if you can live without job security.

    Pros

You are usually given enough time to get tasks done, and given proper tools to get them done. Performance appraisals are fair unless you are grossly incompetent. At times, the work itself can be interesting and challenging. You are given opportunities to become the key "go-to" person for key technologies. Opportunities for travel exist. These trips provide good opportunities to visit and spend time in foreign lands. As an employer, ASM is very fair to its employees. Many employees have left the company, only to return a few years later.

    Cons

No job security to speak of. When manufacturers are investing in capital equipment, ASM hires like crazy. When equipment orders dry up, lots of folks get laid off.. From a software development point of view, there is very little opportunity for design and architecture. Most of the development is maintenance activities.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to mitigate the "boom or bust" employment staffing levels. Be more proactive in developing new technology.

    Pros

Good vacation, increased every 5 years. Good medical benefits. Little to no micro-management, you are left to get on with the job. Flexible working hours, can even work from home on computer-stuff. Good collaboration but only from like-minded individuals.

    Cons

Clique-ish departmental rivalry. Favoritism is rife. Little to no company-wide team spirit. Upper management reactive, not pro-active. Manufacturing relocated to Singapore to reduce costs, but quality suffered so overall the decision was a bad one. Product development didn't listen to engineers much, but made the same changes if requested by customers. Travel policy a disaster for travellers. HR department is pitiful. Programs for employee development are announced but never implemented.

    Advice to Management

Employee satisfaction must become a core value at ASM, or the company will never become the big player it could be.

    Pros

Company has leveraged a couple of good decisions in the past - buying small Finish ALD company. Now the clear industry leader in this key enabling technology.

    Cons

Senior management is weak, and not well tuned into the needs of the company (for a medium size company). Surprisingly large culture gap between Dutch owners and American employee's.

    Advice to Management

Senior management can't be afraid of making key business decisions. Company needs to be better focused on what is best for the company, not just say yes to whatever customers ask for.
