    I worked at ASQ

    Pros

Small to medium sized company. In IT that means a lot more local control of all aspect of IT. Very passionate about Quality, from standards to controls, education, the whole lot. they have a mission and many believe in it.

    Cons

Very siloed company structure. Different heads of diffrent parts of the company do their own thing and not a ton of coordination between different parts ofthe company. Directors are very protective of their silo. All the different groups however have a bad habit of not involving IT in their technical needs then expecting an immediate turn around of their needs and suddenly they find out signifcant amounts of time and money needs to be committed to do what they want to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More involvement of IT upfront.

I have been working at ASQ full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Co workers are polite and professional. The building is proudly well maintained and clean.

    Cons

A general undertone of negativity exists. "This is the way it's always been " attitude – no impetus to change. Management expects miracles to be performed, but the resources are not provided nor much credit given.

There is little to no career development in the way of professional training or career paths. This is ironic since this is a large portion of what ASQ promotes but apparently does not believe in when it comes to its own staff. The internal/external hiring process (if you get there) is slow and arduous.

The use of quality is promoted to the outside world, but again ASQ rarely applies the principles it espouses to value to its own business.

It continues to struggle with serving a more diverse and younger customer base and keep current and be agile in its response to meet their needs. Resting on past laurels mixed in with outdated mentality within management keeps ASQ falling behind with its product offerings.

WIll do if you need a paycheck, but move on when the opportunity arises.

I worked at ASQ full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with (for the most part) were wonderful until recently. The work-life balance is great. There is a lot of flexibility with your work schedule.

    Cons

Morale is extremely low at this company. Management has zero trust in their employees to do their jobs and there is no appreciation for their employees. There is no career growth, despite what they may tell you in your interview. Only lateral moves can be made (and even that is rare), and they offer no training to help you grow. You essentially are stuck there. The technology is so out-of-date, as are their products. There is zero transparency with executives. None of them are on the same page. You can't get any direction or a clear understanding of what anyone wants here because no one is on the same page. The only reason I stayed here for so long is because I just became so complacent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent and clear. Try to understand what your employees do and realize that you hired them for a reason and you should trust them to do their jobs. Show some appreciation. I'm hopeful that the new CEO can make drastic changes at this organization.

    Pros

You may learn a few things. Some may be useful.

    Cons

Like a religion, the zealots are so enamored of their own exhaust, they can't tell what works and what does not. If ever there was a book to be written about a self-defeating management group, this place deserves a feature. Chaos, lack of focus, inability to self-analyze, inability to think critically or execute well plague what should be a relatively simple organization. The visions of grandeur that endure are amusing, and sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Board doesn't understand that CEO has them fooled with rotating three year terms. CEO nest so feathered, he is only interested in self-preservation. Org health irrelevant. Resign.

I have been working at ASQ

    Pros

The volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated. ASQ had hired some smart, saavy managers; however, they left for better jobs.

    Cons

Lack of professional HR staff; ineffective and unfocused management team; favoritism; no accountability for management from the board of directors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recommend a new CEO.

Outdated company struggling to maintain relevance

    I worked at ASQ

    Pros

Extra paid vacation days compared to other companies. Flexible with time (leaving early when necessary or working from home).

    Cons

Pay is substantially lower than what it should be. Company is extremely siloed in the sense that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, resulting in a lot of redundancy. The company does not practice what it preaches - I have never seen anyone utilize a quality tool/mechanism. Tenured staff are resistent to change and are in management positions resulting in an organization that has not evolved to maintain relevance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster and encourage creativity and imagination. Trying something new is not a bad thing if you want to keep your services relevant to the next generation of quality professionals.

I have been working at ASQ

    Pros

ASQ's mission of promulgating quality practices and procedures throughout the world should represent values anyone would be proud to represent.

    Cons

Staff are wildly overscheduled with conflicting prioritization direction from different managers and c-suite officers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recent moves to align on key objectives have been helpful, but more focus on which ONE objective overrides any others would help resolve scheduling and communication difficulties.

    I worked at ASQ

    Pros

Nice people to work with. Nice offices. You get the chance to work on projects you might not get the chance to at other organizations.

    Cons

Most people on staff neither understand nor apply the quality principles the society espouses. Senior management doesn't execute well and has an insular view regarding what is a good idea and what is a bad idea. It is a membership-based organization, which means members will have a lot of input on the things you work on. That's not always bad, but some "member leaders" are in it to feed their egos and line their wallets, and treat headquarters staff poorly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take some of your own training on quality and apply it. Stand up to member leaders who have their own agendas.
