Pros
It's a large company with solid financial statements and customer base making it recession proof. One does not have to worry about job loss.
Cons
It's a large company with lots of red tape. Unfortunately, your professional career can be put on hold because "the needs of the business" dictate it.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership has already started this but they should focus more on trying to develop existing employees, especially the lower management group (94% of total management).
Pros
AT&T is a huge company, one of the perks of this is working on multiple projects in a year and rapidly sharing information across several teams. Some very intelligent technologists work for AT&T and the learning curve is steep. Overall, organization is better than most large corporations.
Cons
Most new corporate hires are brought on as contractors, with little to no chance of going full time.
Advice to Senior Management
It's a toss of the dice. Some managers are outstanding and very personable, others are stoic and uncommunicative. There is a silver lining in that contractors usually get moved to various teams and thus experience different management styles.
Pros
Good Products, Enjoyable Work, and Descent compensation are the only pros that come to mind.
Cons
Little to no real management
Constant feuding between workers and managers / union and the company
Very low employee moral
Usually 55-60hrs a week with no chance of taking time off.
Advice to Senior Management
Stand up for your employee and realize that a happy employee does a better job than a disgruntled employee.
Pros
Better opportunity to learn network format as well as internet protocol
Cons
lenght of time to become a regular employee
Advice to Senior Management
N/A
Pros
Decent pay, but mostly contract workers so no benefits.
Cons
Inadequate training. when training is over, inadequate support from management, and inefficient systems. now i know why it often takes 2 hours for a member's problem to be solved. also, some ridiculous rules, like you must leave your desk during breaks and lunch. Some weird hours but that has to be.
Advice to Senior Management
Stay with support person until problem is solved. Don't insist on WFE for easy fixes. Let people decide how the use their free time. Hire people so they get benefits and want to stay.
Pros
Yearly income ends up being pretty good. Customers recognize and respect the AT&T name. The company as a whole is a solid company to work for in the future.
Cons
Performance reviews are mostly negative. It seems like what ever you do it was not enough or good enough. There is only a few in each office that are superstars.
Advice to Senior Management
Change your negative performance reviews and attempt to respect your people. They work very hard maybe too hard. Change the company to be positive instead of full of greed and negative.
Pros
pay and union agreement so you get time off as expected
Cons
at&t telco or legacy are great places to work but internet services is a cess pool , run by a click of friends rather than experience..ask anyone and they would give anything to go work for the telco side which respects employees..
Advice to Senior Management
learn frm telco and treat employees with the same respect you want in return
Pros
Good pay, discounts on services. Vacation is ok.
Cons
Management has its "teachers pet" disallowing other people with strong ability to be in management a fair fight in promotions. Company has a "one way" street on its ideas and is not interested at all on your opinion nor your pride in working with the company, When it comes to a management position being open... they interview everyone even though that they already know who they want for the position. Waisting everyones time. If you are interested in working for this company, be prepared to be micro-managed.
Brace yourself when you need to miss work for an illness or a death in the family. They don't really care, you will still be disciplined upon return.
Advice to Senior Management
Most of the time, management is only interested in who can bring numbers to the table. Then when it comes down to audit time... every one gets a smack on the wrist instead of if you would have hired a more qualified canidate other than choosing a person that ONLY knows one thing; the whole entire operation could have ran more seamlessly. Employees such as myself feel like its more of a "who you know" company more than "most qualified" company when it comes to promotions.
Pros
Good People, Team work, Benefits, always changing.
Cons
Don't move to Management from Non-Management, you will not catch up in pay.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop listening to Analyst on the street, unless you have worked in the business for more than 20 years, you will never truely understand the nature of the Telecom business.
Pros
You will have the opportunities to work on different large scale enterprise applications using different technologies.
Cons
The company is too big, hard to recognize individual talent, skill and contribution.
Advice to Senior Management
Make compensation fair and reflect employees title, skilla and responsibility
