    Pros

Very good salary for PhD researcher, excellent work culture. Most professors here are very competitive and follow a very good international research culture. Most people speak English very well. So Finland is a good place for international researchers.

    Cons

Cold weather in Finland. Employment situation is not very promising for future, after the downfall of Nokia and all that.

I have been working at Aalto University full-time

    Pros

Smart leadership, nice & smart co-workers. A great atmosphere of doing. People seem happy and want to do their best. Our people really care for our clients and will offer them only the best. Fresh fruit available in the office every day!!!

    Cons

Some of the tools aren't up to date and there's work to be done in harmonizing cultures after the recent merger. Most likely you'll want to work here so much, that it'll tip your work-life balance scale more on the work side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on keeping the positive atmosphere alive and continue building trust.

I have been working at Aalto University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Large freedom, working hours, artistic freedom. Management is quite OK. Very easy to adapt the work and family. Some great people and colleagues.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is leech. You have to use your own credit card to cover travel expenses, and these expenses are not always covered, and very often only partially.

Tools are often obsolete. Salary .. well it is not par to private level at all. Young researchers have to live on starving level.

I worked at Aalto University as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Relaxed athmosphere and friendly co-workers. I could focus on my thesis and do research in an encouraging environment. Coworkers were smart, professional and supportive. Modern premises, good cantine and nice view over Laajalahti. Good libraries.

    Cons

No career-advancement, short-term work contracts and low pay. Although research work itself may be very interesting and rewarding, I would not recommend it as a career.
