Former Employee – worked at Abbott Diabetes Care

ProsDecent benefits, some nice people, mostly smart colleagues in the technical departments.

ConsAmazingly dysfunctional IT - it is just astounding - I had to open the same work item a dozen times as they marked it completed without addressing it.
Very oppressive feeling - people seem to be scared of each other, very cliquish.
Life at ADC is more about looking smart and informed and less about producing results.
Management is treacherous, unsupportive, vicious.
They're glad to hire several contractors in India instead of engineers in California.
Lots of pressure to donate money to select charities - managers are held accountable for their departments' donations to the CEO's old company/charity.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the IT department. Don't lay off entire departments (like marketing) because upper-management cannot make things work. Don't advertise that Miles makes $20-30 million per year while outsourcing, laying off, and canceling projects. Remove as much red tape as possible.

ProsOf more than 6 companies I have worked for - no where has there been a greater focus on the patient at all levels of the organization. This is a great feeling and generally people that work here are competent. Benefits package is standard for the Bay Area. I feel secure in my job.

ConsIn my niche, management seems a bit disconnected from the business. The usual big company issue of people having been here for 10+ years and the inertia that sometimes comes with that. There is also a serious lack of standard processes and systems to help work more effeciently and management is not forward thinking enough to invest in putting in that infrastructure.

Advice to Senior ManagementLack of process and infrastructure to support business processes is seriously affecting our business.

ProsCompensation is reasonable. Schedules are somewhat flexible, with options to occasionally work from home. There is plenty of opportunity for travel both domestic and international.

ConsHigh turn over of senior management makes for poor business strategy, if ANY can be said to exist. Tactics are very reactionary, unfocused and under resourced. Traction on projects is almost impossible. Extremely long hours are expected and extra effort is not appreciated. Promotions are based on political alliances not merit.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to focus on just a few things ADC does well. Too many half thought out pet projects suck resources and funds. More talent with experience actually executing strategy is desperately needed. Multiple groups compete and waste effort looking for a magic panacea to FIX the business. Information is rarely gathered and assimilated in a way that supports informed decision making. For example, the organization wastes time, resources and money because it resists checking benchmarking hurdles, before launching ideas (product or marketing campaigns) into the market.
