Great experience to work there. Can be a little isolating at times if you work in clinical research.

    Pros

Flexible schedules and great benefits! Opportunities to move up the ladder. Great food at the cafeteria. Lots of training classes to gain or improve skills.

    Cons

Management is not very accessible. Lots of travel time. Cubicles are very confining and mundane. Very little interaction with other departments.

I have been working at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working here will give you exposure to medical devices and allow for decent work life balance. It is one of the few companies that still offer a pension. Relaxed environment however, this also hampers efficiency and efficacy.

    Cons

Politics, unfair hiring practices, no accountability for senior management. Hierarchical, no real development pathways just ride the coattails of whomever has the most influence. Tend to be on the low end for compensation in the Bay area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Revamp, clean house. Change the culture, be transparent about promotions and growth opportunities. If people are not performing or require development they should know prior to the year-end review. VPs should rotate divisions every 5 years to continue to churn the culture and promote development from the top down.

Good salary and benefits, culture of fear

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Very good salary and benefits

    Cons

After multiple rounds of layoffs remaining workforce is stretched to get work done (e.g. not good for work/life balance.) Culture of fear in that if you don't put out over and above effort your job may be cut. Strategy changes often so must be willing and able to change gears and not get to see the fruits of your labors of implementing last month's strategy. Very hard to get things done due to legal, regulatory, and funding approvals and understaffing in support groups. Lots of employees end up going out on medical leave…..stress-related?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show genuine appreciation and caring for individuals, treat them like people. Find out from mid to lower managers what's happening vs hearing filtered version from senior managers ("yes" men.)

    Great Job, Very Boring

I have been working at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

ADC is a great place to work if:
You value stability, consistency, and reliability.
If you're paying for a house, raising a family, and want to work at a place that will provide steady work without any of the stress that comes from never knowing if your company will be paying you, or even there, tomorrow.
Your like it if your work touches millions, and helps folks with diabetes live better lives.
You want to work at a place that takes very good care of it's people when it comes to things like benefits, retirement options, and salaries. The goal is to recruit and retain, not recruit and dispose.
Management is driven by sustaining the company, not by being flashy or cutting edge.

    Cons

All that being said, it's boring as hell.
There are none of what the bay area skilled sector has come to think of of as "expected perks"... i.e. no gym, no fancy chefs on staff, no beer fridays, no parties, no weird architectural flourishes. This is an old-growth company run on traditional principles, and has no truck with that kind of silliness.
Office politics and company culture reflect that as well. It is, for want of a better word, a total cube farm. The movie "Office Space" may as well have been written about portions of this company. If you can handle that level of bland, then you'll be fine, if not, you'll go nuts.
If you spend too much time thinking about the fact that our growth model relies explicitly upon millions more people getting a horrible life threatening illness, it can get a little weird.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Broaden the avenues for vertical advancement within the company.
Open and honest communication is better than constant meetings.
Better options for employee health (add a gym).

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good base, bonus, benefits package. hey do not scrimp on projects or events once they are approved. Great camaraderie if you can get in to one of the influence groups. They are getting up in their market position, so things are looking good in general.

    Cons

Have to go through hoops to get budgets approved. Never know who is working behind you to undermine your position or efforts. Can be very nit-picky in and use that against you, when appropriate - while others seem to get away with blatant lies and miss-directions. ALthough their market position is improving, the overall market is drastically hit with recent events ... so not a good industry segment to be in right now unless they change their business model.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Half the management need to change. A third party direct audit of EVERY level is needed to really dig in to the morale and culture, including how supervisors drive and treat their reports.

Abbott Labs is an outstanding company.

    Cons

However ADC is not well managed and is failing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the political bull crap. Keep your innovators and give them some direction. If you keep the suck ups and layoff the innovators this company will fail.
