Pros
It was a very diverse work setting. I was able to get involved in many different projects. Everyone treated me with a lot of respect. It was a great place to work!
Cons
The site was currently going through an out-sourcing. The on-site jobs were currently being cut. Less opportunity for site movement.
Advice to Senior Management
There needs to be more interaction between employees working at the Dallas site and management from the corporate site for better career growth.
Pros
Fast moving, opportunities for advancement in an ever changing environment. management always willing to listen and for one to take risks.
Cons
The capabilities of people in general are not as high as some of other organisations I have worked in. Promotions may not always be on merit.
Pros
Great atmosphere. Excellent benefits. Great communication between upper management.
Cons
New ideas and creativity is not rewarded.
Advice to Senior Management
None
Pros
If competent, easy lateral movement between different areas of the company. Learn a lot about the medical device industry due to the different divisions under Abbott
Cons
Difficult moving up the ranks. Very difficult to do what you want considering that it's a large company and things move very slowly
Pros
Smart, hard working people.
Interesting work.
Cons
Lots of politics, slow decision-making, protection of abusive and disruptive people at senior levels.
Pros
Competitive pay and great benefits (3 weeks vacation to start, healthcare, 401k, profit sharing, and pension plan). Abbott is a company that once you start working, you can quickly see yourself being there a long time. Plenty of opportunities to move across divisions and nicely structured career path.
Cons
Abbott has always been a silo-ed company. The ineffective communication between corporate functions and the divisions can cause major road blocks for projects. This may recede over time as there are major initiatives forcing cross-functional and divisional cooperation.
Advice to Senior Management
While the big initiatives are important, don't lose sight of the critical individuals that are doing the tactical work. Recognize your employees by thanking them in front of your peers and manager(s), this is much more powerful than any monetary award!
Pros
Location is good for N. Chicago work.
Cons
Poor leadership and marketing skills
Advice to Senior Management
Need to focus on developing and managing/support people, that is how you are going to grow your business.
Pros
Great portfolio the company has. Opportunities exists to further your career with some many products across various consumer products
Cons
There is no work/ life balance.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide more opportunities for minorities
Pros
Rock solid financially
Diverse business add earnings stability
Many smart scientists in certain niches
Excellent infrastructure in IT and engineering
Both a classic pension and decent 401k
Cons
Poor communication to the masses
Limited upward mobility for most
Pay less and management is proud of it
Micromanagement is tolerated by the top
Careerists dominate, the talented leave after 4-7 years, the average stay 40 years
Advice to Senior Management
Bring in outside blood
Turnover the executive suite
Pros
Competitive benefits; in line with many pharmaceutical companies
Cons
Abbott Park, Chicago seems to be the "only" place to work.
Advice to Senior Management
Consider more virtual positions across U.S. to complement Chicago-based staff.
