Pros
Abbott Nutrition has very good benefits. The people that work there are also very good, very nice people. I also frequently have a lot of fun in my job.
Cons
As with most corporations, they are slow to accept and act on new ideas or ways of doing things. If you try to champion a new way of doing things, you get labeled as "difficult to work with". Also, contractors are treated as second-class-citizens and we don't retain the ones that are talented and good at their jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Accept that you have to pay for good people.
Pros
Recession Resistant, secure job, offers profit sharing on a yearly basis.
Cons
Does not promote employees within, upper management does not know what they are doing, they never ask questions when they don't know what they are doing. New hires and promotions are based on meeting the "minority" quota not the most competent employee.
Advice to Senior Management
Promote employees internally. Award employees that go the extra mile. Stop hiring incompentent employes from outside the company.
Pros
This company is absolutely dead serious about the pristine quality of products it delivers to the public on a global scale, and that speaks volumes about a company that cares so deeply about doing what's right and not cutting corners.
The culture is caring, people are kind and the work ethic is strong. Having worked at and with other large companies, It's pleasing that the Directors and VPs are, for the most part, good quality and not empty 'Office Space' suits.
Also, Abbott has its own foundation that's there to help its employees in numerous ways (including grants when merited) whenever problems strike their personal lives.
Cons
As with any large organization, there are entrenched interests here and there that like to keep things the way it's always been. Sometimes I think they spend too much time working on buy-in and consensus for changes, which can take much longer than it could, or should take.
Another thing is that things often have to go through numerous approvals and documentation steps because of the Big Pharma rules that the parent company places on this division which is selling consumer package goods. All of this means that you have to have patience to succeed sometimes.
Advice to Senior Management
You've hired good people: trust them instead of placing mountains of required policies on everything.
Pros
You have a lot of freedom @ Abbott Nutrition. It's your territory and you can run as you see fit. However, with that responsibility comes accountability. Your customers give you a lot of freedom as well. Since you're sampling something they want (baby formula), and you're not required to get a physicians signature, you can pretty much come and go as you please. No unnecessary waiting in the waiting room.
Cons
Your results are hard to qauntify. You're performance is measured by a "Mother's Survey." Mothers are surveyed on what formula their baby used and your market share is derived from that survey. Your market share in part determines your bonus. There is a retail sales component to your bonus as well and it's only paid out three times a year.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of "Mother's Survey!"
Pros
The benefit package is terrific and the intrinsic value of working in such a great field where we really make a difference in people's lives is rewarding. Columbus is also a great city to work. A great family city with lots to do.
Cons
Management denegrates the value of employees and tries to wring every iota of time and effort irregardless of the imalance in your life. There is minnimal positive feedback but you sure do hear if there's a problem. Everyone is stressed and the morale is really horrible. There are still layoffs of really really good, talented people while others who have perfected the "suck-up" get promoted.
Advice to Senior Management
Appreciate what your people do for you. You have some amazing employees that you literally abuse.
