    Pros

Good health plans. Location (Menlo Park) is good on the peninsula

    Cons

There are no leaders at Structural Heart, just micro managers. Don't expect inspiration, vision or leadership. Only managers who only know how to squeeze and micro manage. Expect enormous pressure to justify questionable quality decision and enormous disrespect from operations management if you don't agree with their opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can't get blood from a stone. This place is a sinking ship and that's why we are all leaving!!!

I worked at Abbott Vascular full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Young coworkers who are friendly. Good healthcare and pension plans. Product is interesting and complex.

    Cons

Bullying behavior from directors & managers. Directors promote their best friends, friends and wives to management positions that they can't handle and are not qualified for while telling everyone else they can't progress. Lots of people left due to how poor their new managers were. Abbott laid off or fired nearly all of the evalve folk within 2 years of acquisition- there were only 3 evalvers left 2 years later. Turnover is sooo high, dozens and dozens of engineers left this year, most leaving because of how poorly run and paid the place is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a serious look at your behaviors and hiring/promotion policies. There are real reasons while people are so unhappy. Because management are a close (and closed) circle people are afraid of giving honest feedback about their boss to his best friend.

    Pros

Wonderful co workers and supervisors . Easy work . Local drive only a few minutes from home

    Cons

upper management really doesn't care about employees. We were only a number to them. Pay is not competitive with other med device companies. Pay raises were about .20 cents a year. Bonuses were not based on production but on sales and promotions were not individually merit based . Supervisors are only allowed to promote a couple of people per dept per year. Always under the threat of layoffs and employees having to take up the slack to compensate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees pay them a living wage and reward them. they will be more productive

    Pros

In the challenging healthcare business, AV is focused on new strategies to lead the healthcare transformation to higher value offerings. It is not the easy win environment any more, so there are big challenges to all employees at all levels in the company. The culture is good, but needs to get better.

    Cons

Everyone complains about being risk averse, then waits for someone to tell them what to do. Some of the management is very good, others are slow to change. Most employees at all levels are very talented (especially after successive layoffs), but much of the ability goes untapped. Management and staff need to align on strategy (it is starting now) and this business can be much better through increased sales and the innovative growth which follows.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage employee involvement, demonstrate rational risk taking, and guide all employees to help improve sales in direct or indirect ways.

Great to work for this company ,You can learn lots and lots things, great benefits very professional training.

    Cons

Management is the big issue from manager level to up need some tanning so they can handle and treat the employees better ,They should know which employee is capable of doing what things. They can fire a worker without any reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some top level tanning and try to give some professional respect to the employees who work for you.

    Pros

Decent restaurants and shopping close by, Old Town Temecula is close enough to visit during a lunch break. That's about it.

    Cons

Management totally sucks. The biggest bunch of witless worms led by an unethical slug and his progeny that consist mainly of ineffective paranoid brown-nosers. Rats, (as in rodents), frequently are spotted in the administrative buildings and are addressed without any sense of urgency. As are gas leaks. With frequent and regular large layoffs, morale is low and any good people that remain are in the process of jumping ship. Abbott picked up a perfectly good, functioning company, implanted their management and drove it into the ground. As there is no longer any R&D, there is no future. Don't bank on picking up new companies to save them as they aren't any good at integrating them into the quality system.

Buy one-way tickets on Richard Branson's shuttlecraft and take a long space walk without a suit.

    Pros

AV offers a somewhat competitive salary, 401K and a company funded pension. The products are quality products that improve or save lives.

    Cons

Losing in both Coronary and Endovascular
No clear strategy. Employees just do as told so the best ideas based on the best marketing intelligence are often not executed
So many personnel changes in the last few years. Senior Level/High Salary employees were laid off to reduce salary payouts. The beginning of the end started when a few key senior leaders were let go. A lot of sleeping around and associated drama in the organization. "Drama!!!"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A good product will not sell itself. You will continue to fail if you continue to treat your employees bad and penalize employees that give honest feedback. You need to balance the new extreme "finance focused" leadership with motivational leadership. Employees stay and work hard and/or stay, slack and then leave, primarily because of leadership. My guess you will continue to remain arrogant, continue to reduced headcount and continue to beg for quarter end sales bulks to meet your sales projections. Enjoy the roller coaster.

    Pros

Not much besides a steady paycheck.

    Cons

If not part of the good old boy network, your SOL. Mgt is clueless in this current health care environment-only strategy is to bulk products in to the cath labs @ qtr end. Other than that they have no clue. Can't believe Miles White is clueless when it comes to vascular mgt & how inept they all are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house of upper mgt/area sales directors & stop paying millions for worthless companies. ie IDEV....

    Pros

Sufficiently resourced with people to do what needs to get done.

Abbott Vascular in Temecula has laid of more than half its employees (2000+) in recent years. Abbott in Redwood City, about 2 miles from Menlo Park is transferring the entire facility production to Ireland. Despite plenty of skilled workers, Abbott Menlo Park continues to sponsor people from Ireland to fill the best facility positions.

In order to sponsor someone for employment from another country, you have to establish a deficit of workers in the United States qualified to fill the position. With 2000+ laid off in Temecula, and relocating the entire facility that is a few miles away from Menlo Park (the Redwood City facility), there is plenty of internal / US based talent to fill the positions available in Menlo Park. If you post a position for 'Plant Manager', 'Manufacturing Engineer', 'Manufacturing Engineering Manager' or any of the positions which have been filed through sponsorship, you will get dozens of applications of qualified medical device professionals. The upper management of the facility prefer to hire their own people from Ireland because it improves their own position in the company. This can be considered an 'agency cost', which the exponential increased cost incurred by large company due to the difficulty in effectively monitoring for detrimental behavior of it's employees.

The management has facilitated sponsorship of their girlfriends and spouses and put them in key positions for which they are unqualified. Audit findings have found that many of them have been promoted to positions they have no experience in and are out of compliance with QS Regulations regarding qualified resourcing. Some of these employees have been removed from their positions due to lack of qualifications. I have a little Irish blood in me so I considered this a Pro :P I'm just kidding here, but in all seriousness this is not a Pro.

    Cons

About a year ago the management decided to stop 2nd shift production and only have 1st shift production. Not only did all of the 2nd shift have to rearrange their lives to start work at 5am, but their pay was also cut by 10%. Many of the employees receiving pay cuts had no knowledge or statement in their employment contract that mentioned that they were receiving a 10% benefit for working 2nd shift (a preferred shift by most employees). Many employees had recently left other positions to come to Abbott only to show up to their new job and receive a 10% pay cut within a month or 2 and be told that they would have to be into work at 5am. The reason employees were told that 2nd shift was being cut was due to demand, yet no layoff occurred, only a shift of employees to 1st shift and almost no attrition.

Within 6 months, management decided that they had made a mistake and reopened the 2nd shift saying that there had been an increase in demand, again disrupting the lives of all of its employees for reasons that provided no benefit to the company. Demand forecasting did not support the loss or increase in demand for the product.
