I was a teacher in Erie PA and my boss was a psychopath and the kids were very bad.

I worked at Abraxas Youth & Family Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The hours were normal (8) and the pay was "normal" for a teacher in this economy (terrible, 29K/year) but I guess that's what you get for being a teacher (on average). It was great experience for my resume, and it made me more thankful in later years for normal bosses (Abraxas boss was a psycho). It paid the bills for a time...

    Cons

The kids were very bad (good ones get sent to other placements), and the management was corrupt, lazy, and hypocritical. My boss told me on the first day "Off the record, Mr. XXX, you may have to restrain one of these kids just to show them who's boss". Then later, when a legitimate restraint happened, tried to write me up for it though I was not at fault (had 1 restraint in 1 year, only). It got worse from there. Many of the people on the bottom were hardworking and honest, but they often got shafted when illegal practices and missing paperwork came to the light and a scapegoat was needed. The management did NOT care for the kids, and there was inadequate staffing to monitor them. The atmosphere was unsafe and unprofessional.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing much, you already fired my boss (and shut down the whole site... she was awful!). You're just like every other corporation: soulless, brutal, cheap, and not concerned for your product (in this case the well being of the kids)

I have been working at Abraxas Youth & Family Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Clients can be a fun, energetic population

    Cons

Management doesn't understand needs of employees. Half the staff left crying everyday. Lots of staff behavior was shady, and I would never send my own kids for services here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to clean house. There's too much inappropriate behavior among co-works, and even management.

I have been working at Abraxas Youth & Family Services

    Pros

I did get free training in CPR, self defense and some free military BDU's to wear. The co-workers for the most part were friendly and cheerful.

    Cons

The culture of incompetence was from the top down. Most supervisors we're younger than I and had limited life experience. They were robotic and could not adapt to change well.I did not receive any training on how to counsel youth offenders. I also found their unwillingness to change or deviate from proceedure maddening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire experienced leaders and let them manage as they see fit. Deviate from the bootcamp mentality and treat the clients like the humans they are.

I have been working at Abraxas Youth & Family Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    only job(s) in the area

    Cons

    Doesn't care about employees
If we didn't have a union, things would be even worse
Doesn't know or care what goes on at the facilities as long as the top people make money

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be aware that employees need health insurance and benefits and be aware that not everyone is making 6 figures, and that employees like to be treated with some respect.
