I have been working at Academy Sports & Outdoors full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the people that work here are friendly and helpful. Managers usually work well with your availability (especially if you are a college student). You get a 20% off discount on everything except sale items. The work isn't hard, just tedious.

    Cons

You work during holidays (but that's every retail place), some days are later than others, depending on your shift. When you have call-ins, they don't always schedule someone to cover the shift, causing you to have to take care of their part.

    Advice to Management

Make sure shifts are covered when people call out. Rotate who works weekend shifts so they same people aren't always closing on weekends.

I worked at Academy Sports & Outdoors full-time

    Pros

Rapidly expanding company with room for advancement if you're willing to relocate. Team atmosphere and decent hours. Well known brands and quality product surgeons at good prices points.

    Cons

Ran slim payroll which usually made conditioning the store a nightmare at closing. Not enough help on the sales floor during evenings and weekends.

    Advice to Management

Foster a resource to develop succession plans to current employees. Offer deeper discounts on products sold. Increase percent to payroll for labor.

Management is great, you get mileage as an LPA, personal email, minimal supervision. Very tight knit LP department.

    Cons

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

☺ the work itself is pretty easy ☺ If you like talking to people and dont get annoyed easily with angry customers, its a decent fit for you.

    Cons

    • Terrible pay, even if you have an impressive resume and lots of experience • Depending on what department you work in, you could end up working VERY late. I worked in a department that was working past midnight every night. Sometimes we'd have to stay till 2am. one or two times till 3am. One of those times we had to come back the same morning at 9am. So basically i got about 2 hours of sleep. And yes, no one leaves till the whole job is done. which leads me to my next point. • Teamwork required to have a good work experience. Now that may sound like a good thing, but quite frankly in a retail job like that, you get mostly lazy teenagers that dont want to do the hard jobs. Old fashioned/hard-working people like myself end up doing those jobs and end up with extra stress while the other employees get off easy. • They upper management technically treats you with respect, but there is 0% flexibility. They stick to company policy 99% when it comes to breaks, vacations, emergencies, problems, assigned hours, etc. Once your hours are assigned, dont expect to get it changed. You find someone to cover for you or you are screwed. And when i worked there, only one girl was the type of person willing to cover.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better through your policies. Be more flexible. Dont keep employees at work till 3am and then expect them to come in for another 9 hour shift 5.5 hours later.
