    Pros

    This job provides you with the ability to work for a growing company in an environment that alines with your hobbies and lifestyle and gives a great employee discount too! My store does cookouts on some weekends and other events that constantly increase morale.

    Cons

    Not much room for advancement, as is the case for most retail stores.

    Pros

    Everyday is different, love the customer/vendor interactions. It is a fun place to work.

    Cons

    Not competitive in wages, no opportunities to move up(if management does not like you, you will not be promoted, not even interviewed, it does not matter who you talk to, VP's, District managers, human resources, their HR is the worst that I have ever seen) Do not call HR for anything, it is a waste of time and breath, they just take your information down, if they do that, they DO NOT follow up.. Leadership, communication and training is not adequate, there is no training just online modules/case studies, which are not accurate. Benefits, no bonus for regular employees that do a majority of the work, but management will cut hours, (reduce in pay for employees), that have families and bills to pay with no remorse or any way of making up that time. (So, that they can make their bonus.) No choice in your health benefits, only one option, with a rate increase. If you have great attendance and not a great employee, you can receive a good increase, if you have good attendance your increase is minimal. In other words, you attendance can dramatically decrease your annual pay increase to maybe 10 cents.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rotate the store directors within their living area if possible, maybe every 2 years, more than that in one store should not be acceptable, you would be able to weed out the ones that are not in tune with their own store, management or company policies, merchandising guidelines, etc. If they are doing such a great job, awesome, put them in another store to improve those that are in need. Get that fresh perspective from different management, new ideas, you keep the same person at the same location, they get lax, take naps in the managers office, make their vacation plans online, does not know the name of employees that have been working for a year in their own store. It is crazy, but it has been done and still continues. Giving back to associates, bonuses for sales, for training managers(yes,STL's training managers, not MIT but MANAGERS), for being FSC certified, years of service, have two nights of family shopping(so everyone can participate), give them a coupon for an extra 10-20%(in addition to their discount) off their purchase up to 1000.00. for Christimas. They must use it one of those two days, or lose it. Have it on a sunday,the store closes early, let it be an employee night of shopping, food and fun, saying thank you for your hard work. Getting employees healthy, pay for half of a gym membership, if they sign up for a year. Giveaways, per store, quarterly, a gym bag, with a 100 worth of merchandise, all these things could be used as a tax deduction.

    Can be a fun and educational environment. Some good perks can come with employment, for upper management good benefits. It was a fair experience.

    Cons

    Customer's can be the worse considering what type of product to store sell. Can be stressful during the holiday's and customer's tend to be even more crazy and rude.

    Don't threat your subordinates as if they are inferior, they might find it hard to become motivated to do things for you.

    Pros

    Usually very good at working with schedule requests and great for a student's work schedule; most people are very friendly and great to work with, will drop what they're doing to help others. Discount is nice.

    Cons

    Few real advancement opportunities; frequently cut hours. Our store has a bad favoritism problem; a small group of people who were there when the store first opened can literally do anything they want, be as lazy as they want. Whereas, you work hard completing a project in a few hours and get scolded for saying hello to someone. I have heard of appalling management treatment of front-end employees, but haven't witnessed it first hand.
