I have been working at Academy Sports & Outdoors part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The regular employees are very nice and fun to work with and everybody has one thing in common... not enough hours to survive on. Academy does have a sweet 20% discount.

    Cons

They hire lots of people and give them all 6 to 24 hours a week. Instead, try hiring less people and giving full time status and hours to those who have been there longer and toughed it out. Turn over is very high.

Managers definitely play favorites, doesn't matter if you are good at your job, if you offend one of them you might as well just start looking for another job... your hours will be cut to ridiculously low numbers.

I am currently looking for another job...and so are most of the people who work at Academy. Getting a straight, truthful answer from management can be tricky, also.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop screwing over your employees with ridiculously low hours. You wonder why customer service is an issue and sales are dropping? It's because we are all starving to death.

    Cons

I have been working at Academy Sports & Outdoors

    Pros

They worked very well with my schedule, great coworkers, pretty decent benefits if you are full time, they match 401K contributions, the discount is pretty nice, depending on your classes they offer some tuition reimbursement - there are some stipulations to that but if you qualify its pretty nice. There are plenty of opportunities to move up if you are looking to do that as well.

    Cons

It is retail hours - so chances of being off on holidays and school breaks is slim to none, lack of communication sometimes between management and associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you let your associates know that you value the work they do. Also, don't let conflict amongst each other trickle down to your associates. We are all a team working towards the same goal. Don't be afraid to get into the departments and help out when needed, doing the basic work isn't beneath you.

I have been working at Academy Sports & Outdoors full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benefits and discounts are decent.
The idea behind the company culture and values is incredible. Should be followed and not just preached.
Company is growing steadily which should create an increased amount of opportunities and professional growth.

    Cons

Company does not have a clear understanding of leadership as a whole. There are plenty of "I" in team.
No current any plan in place to help guide lower level associates along a career path through training and mentoring.
Lower level associates can be treated as expendable commodities not necessarily viewed as the future of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider learning and understanding how to effectively use the different personalities of your team. In order to achieve true success, there has to be balance which is difficult to achieve if everyone views the world in the same way.
